Build #020 - Polaris Manta "Double-BBM" MB Sig

Post by drbass » 22 Sep 2018, 20:59

OK, here's the last one for the moment, plenty of stuff on the go right now.

This is going to be a little different. A commission for our very own kodou, it'll be a standard Manta shape, 35", 5 string. Difference will be the electronics: a double Nordstrand Big Blademan pickup configuration with the matching Nordstrand JC3-b preamp. Beastly is all I can say, beastly.

Oh, and the finish will be a little different too. Northern ash body and (it's my last piece, I won't order any more) spalted maple top which looks crazy good (and, if all goes according to plan, will look even better once finished:

That's all for now. Bit of glueing up over the next week (have a week off) so stay tuned for news.

Regards,
Michael

...... Northern ash body and (it's my last piece, I won't order any more) spalted maple top............
Am I correct to assume that's because spalted maple is not the easiest wood to work with given the variation in hardness throughout ? Great results when it's done though :yep

Totally agree with everyone that the results can be quite spectacular but it's just so inconsistent within one piece, and then every piece can be vastly different again so very hard to get consistent results (don't see too many spalted tops coming out of the Fender factory, or Musicman/EB, Warwick, Sandberg etc.).

This piece shouldn't be too bad - there is a super-soft and crumbly region (bits falling of if you blow on it hard enough) but that's outside the template area, and the rest appears to be pretty firm and consistently so.

Michael

Well it is diseased wood, so makes sense. Deciding it’s not really worth the trouble is my starting position!
Strings: Fender, Framus, Warwick, Custom
Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass
Patch: TC Electronic, Aguilar, T-Rex

Boring: northern ash glued up. Next stop thicknessing (that'll be in a couple of weeks' time) and rough body shape sawing.

This will have a very interesting grain pattern on the back since there's an irregularity (on the top piece, or left in the picture) that goes all the way through. Can't wait to discover the final structure.

Michael

Top glued up beautifully, slightly different approach this time. As you can see the really crumbly bits are way outside the template area which makes me rather happy (but I knew that beforehand). There probably won't be enough material for a matching back cover but most definitely it'll be a matching headstock.

Michael

Worth a couple of pics.

Rough bandsawing of the top (to get rid of all those crumbly bits) and body (to get rid of some weight). And a surprise package from California.

Close-up:

4 push-pull pots here - this is from the Nordstrand site:
3 band bass preamp with volume (pull passive), blend, treble (push/pull neck pickup - series down, parallel up), mids (1kHz down, pull up for 400Hz), bass (push/pull bridge pickup - series down, parallel up). I think it'll be a massive-sounding bass considering this will be fed by the Big Blademan pickups!!
