Build #017 - Polaris Merlin NT5 Bocote

Post by drbass » 09 Sep 2018, 09:47

Timber for this one is all sorted but not sure about the electronics. If you're interested in this one contact me and we'll work out the right combo. Otherwise I might just put in the usual suspects.

This is the top:

There'll be walnut wings and a 5 mm maple contrast layer - only 3 parts this time, not 4.

35", 24 frets, neck will be 5 piece, three maple with 2 walnut stringers. This will be the last one I build with a central maple wedge, it's just so much more work compared with using square pieces of timber. Matching angled headstock. Most likely a birds eye maple board for contrast, I have a few floating around.

ETS Singles for the bridge, the usual Hipshot short key Y 3/8" tuners, and flushmount Dunlop strap locks.

That's all for now.

Regards,
Michael

That grain is insane!
How many hours do you put into builds each week?

Yeah, Bocote is quite striking. I'll be watching this one closely

Hi Paul,

It IS crazy (that's why I bought it ;) ).

Depends on how much time I have. Been pretty busy with work in the last 6 weeks so not a lot in terms of hands-on - but a lot of planning (mostly in my head). I'll be a little more active in the coming weeks, as you know there's a few builds to be done.

Regards,
Michael

Hmmm... for some reason I have “Every Breath You Take” running through my head when I look at that piece of timber. Just stunning!
Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Really, Tim? What I'm doing here is so much removed from what Sting normally plays :D . Maybe this sort of pattern comes up when you have the "Visualizer" option turned on ;) .

Should be a nice visually appealing instrument ... .

Had a few issues along the way with the neck for this one. It's a neck-through with a central wedge resulting in a tapered look with the stringers and all. Anyway, here's the glue-up (just clamped):

Bit of a backstory with the fretboard here:

I cut slots to go with a 34" scale rather than 35". It is an AMAZINGLY nice piece of birdseye maple but I can re-purpose this one, and I have a solid be maple block that's just as nice and probably good for 3 to 4 boards so all is not lost.

Bit of love for this thread. Arrived today: a couple of tuners.

Is there a collective noun?

Well, I know who to turn to if I need a spare tuner. Do you have one in gold :p

They're all spoken for, Ivan, and no, no gold ones.

New board for this build, made from a block of birdseye maple 44 mm thick. I bandsawed off one 11 mm slice and was able to go straight to the drum sander rather than using the thicknesses first.

You really have to zoom in to see the eyes but there's plenty of them and they'll pop once the board is finished:

No-one has come forward and expressed an interest in this one so - after some consideration and a brief discussion in the workshop yesterday - I decided to make this fretless. Yes, with a maple board. can't wait!

Second-last board glue-up in this batch:

As you can see I've put in my "invisible" fret markers.

As mentioned elsewhere I'll be on leave from Thursday so expect a lot more action and progress (having said that I'm still waiting for Delano pickups and ETS hardware - bloody Germans ;) ).
