Build #017 - Polaris Merlin NT5 Bocote

Post by drbass » 09 Sep 2018, 09:47

Timber for this one is all sorted but not sure about the electronics. If you're interested in this one contact me and we'll work out the right combo. Otherwise I might just put in the usual suspects.

This is the top:

There'll be walnut wings and a 5 mm maple contrast layer - only 3 parts this time, not 4.

35", 24 frets, neck will be 5 piece, three maple with 2 walnut stringers. This will be the last one I build with a central maple wedge, it's just so much more work compared with using square pieces of timber. Matching angled headstock. Most likely a birds eye maple board for contrast, I have a few floating around.

ETS Singles for the bridge, the usual Hipshot short key Y 3/8" tuners, and flushmount Dunlop strap locks.

That's all for now.

Regards,
Michael

How many hours do you put into builds each week?

Hi Paul,

It IS crazy (that's why I bought it ;) ).

Depends on how much time I have. Been pretty busy with work in the last 6 weeks so not a lot in terms of hands-on - but a lot of planning (mostly in my head). I'll be a little more active in the coming weeks, as you know there's a few builds to be done.

Regards,
Michael

Hmmm... for some reason I have “Every Breath You Take” running through my head when I look at that piece of timber. Just stunning!
Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Really, Tim? What I'm doing here is so much removed from what Sting normally plays :D . Maybe this sort of pattern comes up when you have the "Visualizer" option turned on ;) .

Should be a nice visually appealing instrument ... .

Had a few issues along the way with the neck for this one. It's a neck-through with a central wedge resulting in a tapered look with the stringers and all. Anyway, here's the glue-up (just clamped):
