Nice.

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: Technically this is obviously not a short scale (but for me it is ...).

So these arrived today;

One is coarse/medium, the other one is medium/fine. And what better day to give them a go. First impressions? Wow, very nice. Even, controllable, quick. Obviously not the tool for all applications (concave surfaces are not great to shape although one can make inroads initially). Why did I wait so long?

Went to work, couple of hours, all hand-shaped. Here's just the front which is about 90% there:

The walnut looks black in this pic - not true. Here's the real colour:

Close-up, and this one is briefly sanded with 120 and a very quick one with the sample I've shown in the first pic. It's a mesh rather than a solid backing, feels nice and seems quite efficient - this piece is a 400 grit, and it really worked well. Anyone has any experience with that stuff?

Anyway, too much time in the sun, little bit of paperwork now.

Regards,
Michael

A little more shaping (well, a lot more, actually, it just doesn't show that much).

There's a semi-single cut vibe going on here (at least from my point of view). And I love the tummy cut!

Another hour, maybe two, of rasping and filing, then sand sand sand. Oh, of course I'll do the routing before the sanding ... .

Michael

As mentioned in the Gumdrop thread the Japanese rasps make getting templates organised so easy.

This bass will be an absolute groove monster - I mean, have you ever seen such a deep pocket? ;) :D

There'll be a lot of additional shaping to get the neck-body transition as comfy as possible so don't get hung up about the square shape at the moment.

Electronics will go in here:

How good does the walnut look? And it'll be amazing once the finish goes on.

Michael

And last neck-vana post (#5): the simplest and smallest and shortest. maple, purple heart centre, maple.

I think we're done with filing, and now there's only sanding, sanding, sanding (and of course some routing and drilling). Happy with the shape now, will be reasonably easy to get to the high register frets.

Michael, you are on fire

I have no idea how you manage to make all the progress you do. Are you sure you're not running some kind of sweatshop in the back room?

Thanks, Ivan,

I wish I could dedicate my time in a more organised way but at the stages I'm at right now a lot has to happen in the workshop which means it's a week-by-week proposition. Having a bandsaw and a thicknesser/planer at home would make it possible to do a little bit each day. Anyway, not complaining, just explaining.

And Tim, I bloody well hope Theo is thrilled (as a matter of fact, I know he is at least pretty excited :) ).

Michael

love the timber! The shape reminds me a little of a thicker version of a P-bass Lyte. I really like it a lot! Good job!
