Matt had me swap the tops so the fretless (lined, by the way, with Luminlay strips) will have the amboyna burl top:
Luminlay - something like this??

Something like that, Owen, only in blue (not green). And no dots on the board, only side markers so it’ll be a little less “in your face”.

Michael

Always a little sad to cut slots into a perfectly fine board but hey, in this case they'll shine bright like a diamond ;) .

Cut the slots while the board was still flat (to get a straight bottom) which was a little tricky in a couple of places since the epoxy had filled the starter slots I had cut previously. All went well though, happy with the result.

Here are a couple of pics of the board with one Luminlay strip - this was was "loaded" in the sun for about 5 seconds.

I'll have to measure the actual width of the slots before glueing in the glowing stuff. The strips I have are .5 mm thick and they "just drop in" which means they might be a tiny. it too thin. There's another version measuring .58 mm in thickness which might be a better fit - once I know I'll order the appropriate size.

Then it's glue, cut level, and then sand sand sand to get the 20" radius.

Michael

I'll actually get a small sample of the thicker Luminlay strip - very nice people at "Meister Works" - so I can check the slot size properly and make an informed decision.

Worked on the neck - rough band-saw of the taper and the headstock followed (at home) by using a template bit and a small router to get the proper taper:

Detail:

Requires a little bit of cleaning up but the grain of the wenge is just absolutely nuts can't wait what it looks like when finished.

And this was in the Big Box as well:

Good times.

Michael

This one's for Ivan - body wings:

Just indicative of course. The thing that works quite well here is that the walnut is fairly light where it connects to the neck core - originally I was going to put a light (oak) veneer layer between the wenge and walnut but it looks like there is enough contrast already.

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: apologies for the blue tape - I need to remove some material and you can't see any markings/lines on the wenge!

Apologies for the lull in activities (good thing we have Pete (a.k.a. slowlearner) who dazzled the whole building community with his innovative and unconventional approach to building) but work got in the way.

Received these yesterday:

That's where they are this morning:

A faint glow but of course not fully loaded. Anyway, really hoping to get a few things done this weekend but rest assured, I'll be on leave from next Thursday onwards so there'll be a lot more progress.

Michael

And they're in. Interesting exercise, very brittle material so I cut off the vast excess with a pair of scissors and then used the Dremel with a sanding attachment to get as close to level as possible. What amazed me was that the material was glowing as I Dremel-sanded it off but on further reflection all hat happens is you put in energy (via friction) and that is released as luminescence. Pretty logical.

Here's what it looks like - contrast will be better once it's all sanded properly and finished:

That's the bit no-one will actually see - a light oak veneer will go onto this, and then it goes onto the actual body. Thought I'd show you the nice book-match - would be a nice top in its own right.

Thought I'd show you the glue-up of the veneer layer for this one.

Pouring the epoxy mix:

All spread out, leave for couple of minutes to "level out":

Veneer on top:

I had two different veneers - the lighter one went on the other build (since it's a much lighter top), the darker one is being used here.

Here's the sandwich from the side - you can clearly see the amboyna burl top, the wenge layer and just about visible is the veneer:

My little clamping contraption:

And some additional clamps applied to make sure there's even pressure along the edges of the sandwich:

Last day at work for the next 7 weeks so I'm hoping to progress things at a much higher speed from here on in.

Michael
