Single Bridges

Post by drbass » 29 Jul 2018, 17:22

Hi all,

I’ve been using, somewhat reluctantly, the Hipshot Solo single bridges for my Kermit builds. They’re “OK” but really nothing fancy, and it looks like the quality is somewhat on the downhill slope (admittedly I don’t have a huge sample size but the last lot had a very obviously different finish, and the back part - where the ball end is anchored - was bent quite significantly on one, and somewhat on a couple of others).

Sure I could use “proper” bridges but for the Kermits I like to keep a distinguishing feature with the “tone block”-mounted individual bridges.

Question: does anyone have experience with single bridges (good quality)? I had a look at the Babicz and like what I see but they’re just a little expensive. ETS looks interesting as well. Would love to hear your experiences, and maybe even not just singles but bridges in general. What do you use, what do you like, what don’t you like, what can you recommend?

Regards,
Michael

I’ve used the ABM individual saddles a couple times now. I like the mass and build quality.

Cool, Pete,

Had a look at those as well, just forgot to mention them.

Hope everything is going well in Canberra!

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: How do you adjust intonation? Looks like you slide the saddle, then tighten a little grub screw to hold the saddle in the correct spot.

I have never tried one and I have no idea whether the Babicz makes any difference at all, but the engineering and design of them really appeals to me. I'd never bother putting one on any sort of known mass-produced bass, but on something boutique where I was speccing it out, the Babicz would attract me.

Yep exactly right. T4M is something I bough but am yet to use. Seem decent

Spector style, but not with all at once. Curious.

I've used the saddles from ABM bridges before. I carved channels into the body wood for them to slide in and strings were anchored through body.

All good info, looks like there are a few alternatives. I DO like the Babicz concept and would agree with Mike that they're probably overkill (both in terms of function and price) for your standard bass but then, I wouldn't call a Kermit a standard bass (it's not really boutique either, I really wouldn't go that far).

Might have to order one of each and try them for functionality before "locking down" (out intended).

Hi Chris,

Yes, I had a look at those as well - thing is they are rather inexpensive which has a lot of potential to translate into "cheap".

My current thinking is more along the lines of Babicz (although a little bulky) or ETS (waiting to hear back from Tom), and possibly ABM.

Michael

I bought some like those and they don’t fit with the quality of the instruments you are shooting for. I decided not to use them I have them floating around somewhere if you’re interested in having a look without spending money

Thanks for the offer, Pete, but even without looking at those in person I tend to agree with your statement.

Been using these for years... yes, they're budget item but my experience of them has been pretty good. I'd order a set and see what you think.
