Well about 90% of the time the clever clod who I bought the bass from has done the hard work of matching and wearing in the right strings. If I do change them end up putting the original back on. Only bright stainless, very thin gauge, and when I really want flats the originals come off and stay off. I guess I just really like old strings.
Strings: Fender, Narcdor, Framus, MusicMan

I'm really digging the D'Addario half rounds on my MIM P bass.
Dime the tone knob and they are clanky rounds, turn the tone knob to zero and you have flats. Pretty cool.
Loud things: Trace Elliot Elf and 10" cabs ,Markbass LittleMark 250, Hartke HA2500 amps, Hartke XL210 cabs
Pretty things: Fender MIA P, MIM P and J, Hofner B Bass, SX J, Yamaha DTX400 drum kit
Bands: Los Mescalitos , Distorted Tarts

Hey Mr Funky Jase
Maybe do what I do - bring along an Xotic RC Booster pedal.
Set up your bass for the meat and potatoes sound with what ever strings you like - then hit the pedal ( set up ) for the slap bits.
Fender 'P' basses, Labella DTF's
Ampeg, Aguilar, Schroeder
