Trying bass gear in Sydney, what a mission.
One point about Markbass if you're trying any of them is that you must ring ahead and don't take "Yes" for an answer. Three times with three separate shops in the last few months I've found Markbass dealers listing a std cab on their website, complete with std cab photo and price. When I've checked ("Sorry to be a pest, what colour are the cones?") it's turned out to be a Blackline, and the shop had no idea.
Also, many shops these days (I get it, margins, volume, expense of holding stock, it's not easy etc etc) are little more than drop shippers and will happily list stuff on their site that is not in store and never will be in store (other than to ship it straight out). Phone ahead.
Mall Music in Macquarie Centre sometimes have a decent range of stuff, but of course nothing boutique if that's what you're after.

http://www.mallmusic.com.au/ At the Macquarie Centre - I've only been there once but I remember they had a selection of basses, amps and effects that was better than , say, Allan/Billy Hyde
MTD Heir 4 Lefty with Nordstrand and Bartolini pickups,Genz Benz Shuttlemax or Magellan 800 , Zoom B3 and a Roland GR-55 into Schroeder or Bergantino cabs

Actually Mike.... I'm curious to see how your RA Mouse pairs with micro heads, like your GK MB200.bigswifty wrote:Trying bass gear in Sydney, what a mission.
I'm keen on a lightweight but quality rig for playing it in Big Band (GK MB200 +Ampeg 210av).
Or a cheap but decent cab I can leave there, like Eden EX112.
I'm open to buying used gear.... just need to try some stuff first to work out what will match the Mouse/Band/Room.

Re: Shops with bass gear in Sydney
As always, you're welcome to try anything of mine.
With my Mouse I've only ever used it through my Markbass 121P. I didn't think it sounded as good as it should until I started fiddling with the "Suck Control" (The Markbass VPF Knob
) and backing off the volume on the Mouse a lot. I'm happy enough with it now. Happy *enough* - doesn't mean I couldn't be happier. And walking into a gig with your bass on your back and one light little combo is nice. I used the Mouse and the combo at gigs twice last weekend. Both very small venues, but I would just throw another cab at it if I needed more.
I guess I don't really gig my Mouse often enough to justify more time/cash expenditure for a different rig, probably only gig it half a doze times a year or so. Last weekend was unusual where I used it twice.

Thanks Mike & thanks Andy for your offers - I'll def tee up a time in the next week or two.
Do any stores carry Acoustic Image heads in Sydney anymore? The latest Clarus Head is tiny and on my radar too as it matches particularly well with any Rob Allen bass.

Re: Shops with bass gear in Sydney
Sydney does not really have a decent bass shop. I have been to most of them over the last couple of years and only George at Bass Gear Direct has any specialist knowledge. I switched to Aguilar gear recently and had to try it out when I was in London as the only place that stocks any Aguilar gear in Sydney is Turra Music and they stock the bare minimum and the staff seem trapped behind the counter. In the end I bought pretty much everything from Bass Centre in Melbourne who are great and by dealing direct with Aguilar in New York, who are also really helpful.
Fender Jazz. Fender Precision. Musicman Stingray. Aguilar. Bergantino. MXR. Tech 21. Darkglass. Ampeg.
