P bass cab/amp setup

Post by ozrider » 09 Aug 2018, 09:29

I have the amphones headphones and my p bass sounds phenomenal through them. But not so much so through my LWA1000 amp/ CN112 berg cabs. My amp/cab setup seems to have been made with the stingray in mind, but that is the tone I keep coming back to. But I do have a p bass and was wondering how to get that amphone sound. All the website says is:

Bass: Designed specifically for low frequencies, offering a wide-range response.

So anyhoo, I'm chasing the p bass tone of the amphones if that makes sense. Do I need a different amp/cab setup? I can't help feel a fridge would do the p bass justice, but I aint lugging one around! :peep:

I have the Amphones you are talking about and think I know what you mean about the tone - quite 'old school/classic P Bass tone). Following that logic the perfect set-up is probably a valve amp and big heavy/ceramics cab - I found an Ampeg SVT3Pro/410HLF set up sounded great with the P Bass (but like the 'fridge' found too hard to lug around).

Tone is very subjective but from my gear I would recommend a more valve sounding head like the Aguilar TH500 and assuming you need portability a pair of ceramics like the DB112's or Berg REF112s for a more 'modern tone.

^exactly what I was thinking... I had an ibanez p bass through a traynor head into the bergs before and it sounded amazing... so its the head or a patch on my zoom B3 I guess

Or chuck a VT Bass in front of it, or one of those cab sim pedals. It’s about knocking off the top end and something in the mids I can’t quite put my finger on.

VT in front of a Mesa D800 and a pair of Subway 112 sounded like a trad Ampeg fridge so I’d try that first. If you want an amp to do the same but smaller than a fridge a B15 style tube amp into a sealed 15 will do it.

Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass
Cones: Baer

Good call on both fronts. My VT Bass is the last pedal I would sell and is essentially an 'Ampeg in a box', it just adds a depth of tone. And tried the DB800+ and Subways recently and they have a nice fat almost rubbery rock tone to them which I can imagine is enhanced with a VT Bass.

stick the Ampeg SCR DI that is for sale on here in front of any amp to get that tone :)

but really, chasing a headphone tone in an amp is not such a good idea

Just 2c worth here,
A P bass sounds superb thru the Rumble 500C. Sounds like they were made for each other. ..... strange that.
That's the cheap n simple option. Of course, my P sounds amazing thru the Super Bassman too

I added some cab sim to the ampeg patch in the zoom b3... smoothed out the tone nicely. Will play around with it a bit more.

Multiple 12s --> 2 x 12 or 4 x 12 with a big old Bassman/Holden/Traynor ... or alternatively an Aguilar AG700 or Mesa Carbine M6.

Thanks for all the input folks. I think my p bass problem is solved. I'm enjoying the p bass tone out of my cabs now... some cab sim and valve sims out of my B3 is just nice enough... but it does make me miss that traynor I sold to an ozbasser here

Anyhoo I have been also watching scott devine and how he gets so much dynamics out of his p with flats... I love that style of playing.. got to skip to 3:00

I'm playing around with the SVT patch. Cab sim at 50, Cab type is ORGN (which selects 810E cabinet), Ultra Both('Emphasizes high and low frequencies'), eq set flat.

The thing is, George, he only gets "that tone" and the dynamics because of his bass face and of course the hat ... ;) .

Haha his grooves are pretty stellar though, he gives me bass face just watching his licks. Check this one out - killer groove and ... bass face!
