Put out of a job with one left foot - crazy organ player

Post by slowlearner » 27 Mar 2018, 07:29

Just came across Barbara Dennerlein by accident on youtube. Apart from being a monster soloist and comp player, she does crazy hot bass lines with her feet! I'm out of a job!

Enjoy. :)

I always think that when I see a full organ setup. Lucky they’re so hard to transport or we would see more of them!

Still... being serious for a minute for pat bass lines sure they can bang one out, but where’s the variation? The nuance? Some of my fav bass lines to play are standard patterns like Cake - Stickshifts and Safetybelts, but most are slower and require greater control than a foot will allow. Most people in the audience wouldn’t notice mind you. Like blues players thumbing the bass line.

Amazing playing though, what overachievers organ players are.
Strings: Fender, Framus, Warwick, Custom

There are some other vids of her on youtube and she's just smashing out bebop walking lines while soloing over the top at high speed. It's really amazing!

The organist that I worked with in our choir was nothing short of amazing in the way he could co-ordinate hands and feet on a three manifold, full pedal board organ. As per the OP the bass line on the left foot, swell on the right foot, fingers on the keys at different heights when not changing stops on the fly. We used to tour with a Leslie but changed up to a synth (a Yamaha DX7 when they were new) to make it easier but I'd still catch him moving his feet to what the bass line was by habit. His love was to roll up to a church with a "proper" pipe organ and incorporate it in the show some how. Sometimes the band would do an item while the choir changed out or we'd just have a solo singer. He'd change instruments to the old organ and we'd all be retuning just so we could create that special atmosphere. Sky's Toccata was one of our goto's for old organs.

Damn fine. But if a bass player did have the stuff the guitarist did in "Tacoma Black Party", we'd be instantly sacked. 8|

Yes Kerry I am old. Not as old as some here, but I was performing in The Proclaimers choir in the early 80's, did over 18 years with them all told, wonderful times I'll always treasure. Can't say when the DX became part of John's kit but it'd have to be early 80's. He had a few nice keyboards through the years, he hasn't sold any of them either. We still catch up regularly and he still plays as well as he ever did. And Michael, the body might be a bit tanned from a week in the sun but it's feeling it's age today, I was so tired last night I almost didn't go to the shop but I had to get that binding on. It was good to see you again.

Binding you say? Are you holding out on us or is it a super secret surprise?
