What different fingerboard woods have you had experience with in your different builds.
Hi Bruce,

I've used maple, wedge and ziricote so far. Ziricote is hard but forgiving, wedge can be iffy due to a tendency to crack/break off (but great once finished), and maple is maple - easy to work with.

I have one zebrano and a couple of koa boards floating around, just haven't quite suited any of the builds yet.

Regards,
Michael

Have you worked with any figured maple? That seems at the edge of what would make sense for a fretboard. Zebrano would seem a little over the top. Lovely wood, though.

Not for fretboards, Bruce. Both Birdseye and flamed maple pretty much behave like standard maple but flamed can be rather distracting if the figuring is too intense.

I've used quilted maple for body tops (in fact I have a couple of nice ones waiting for builds) and there's a distinct difference in hardness between sections which requires being careful when routing and/or body shaping.

Michael

Very brief update.

Not quite ready to join the blue man group:

Front

and back

Happy to talk about the pitfalls of working with rubbing on aniline dye at some stage.

Rubbed down hard with 0000 and just applied the first coat of the Oslo to the front - the padauk popped even more than in the picture.

Neck? No progress at this stage but I'll keep you posted.

Michael

That blue looks terrific Michael. Great contrast with the red padauk.

Did that blue on your fingers seep through the the gloves?

No, Ivan,

Simply my lack of experience with aniline dyes :D .

Michael

The intensity of that blue is just how I would like it

Sandblasting ... reminds me of the limited red and blue P's Fender did around last year, can't get them anymore.

One of the limited wine sandblasted red Ps was in the classifieds here a few weeks ago, so they're around.

So thoroughly unnatural that blue, but surprisingly I like it. Must be the excellent execution.

Execution is streaky at best, Nick - steep learning curve full of pitfalls particularly when you extrapolate from your test pieces and change things on the go (as a scientist I should not be succumbing to that behaviour but there you go - this is a different kind of science).

I was always aiming for a brilliant blue (and really, this is turquoise rather than blue) and I've got it. It has "mellowed" a little since applying the Osmo finish but it still pops!!!

Regards,
Michael

Edit: changed "freaky" to "streaky" - must have been an auto-correct ...

Just ordered some more wood:
quilted maple back and sides (couple of nice fingerboards there!):

amboyna burl, first time for me, looks great:

couple of maple burls:

and some quilted maple:

No spalt this time, didn't see anything that took my fancy.

Michael

Woah... there's no hope for you now Michael. Maybe someone should start a Luthiery rehab for all us wood-junkies. :D
