Re: Who is obsessive about their coffee??
We have a cheap Breville with a double bottomed filter. The filter used to get clogged up pretty easily though and then you end up with stuff spraying out of seals everywhere and getting coffee everywhere except in your cup. I have replaced it with a single wall filter and proper heavy tamper and so far we can get coffee that is at least as nice with as good crema as the original filter. So far so good.

The double wall filters are a (metaphorically) cheap shortcut to crema for the 90% of donks using preground stale coffee.
Get rid of em !
I just bought a sunbeam conical for $20 on ebay. The mazzer takes up too much space.
Also i cant recommend a keep cup enough, the glass ones are great to drink out of and you enjoy your coffee tgat much more.

Some coffee cup stats in Aus.....
But also, it TASTES BETTER in a proper cup.
https://www.samedayrubbishremoval.com.a ... istics.phpA tram full of coffee cups are thrown out every half hour. That's why we should bring our own reusable coffee when we go to coffee shops.
1 billion coffee cups are used in Australia every year - these are not recycled
This is enough to circumnavigate the world two and a half-times
Most people don't realise that coffee cups can't be recycled
50,000 cups are used every half hour.
Most coffe shops don't offer discounts for bringing a reusable cup (find a shop that does!)
If we all played our own small part by... only using our own reusable coffee cup, huge results could be seen.
But also, it TASTES BETTER in a proper cup.

Re: Who is obsessive about their coffee??
I DO use my own re-useable coffee mug when out.... but I'm struggling to find places that offer discount for using it ... and I like a good coffee so... I'll still go to the places that make good hot coffee over a crud place that offers a discount.
Ph... and at home, I use a stove top express thingy. Tastiest option I've found.

The recycling issue in more detail....
http://wastemanagementreview.com.au/the-difficulty-of/The real challenge with recycling paper cups, Richard told BeanScene, is not that paper cups can’t be recycled, but more that several leading recycling companies are simply refusing to do it. Richard nevertheless welcomed the media attention to put pressure on recycling companies to make the effort to recycle paper cups.
Last week, Grant Musgrove, CEO of the Australian Council of Recycling, noted there’s more to it than just the manufacturer.
He told Fairfax Media "packaging companies need to stop dreaming up new “sustainable” packaging that can only be recycled by expensive specialised facilities. It should be made out of material already recyclable – such as cardboard.
“It’s relatively easy to come up with a new packaging format. Packaging companies that don’t talk to recycling companies first, and then complain about their product not being recycled – there is an abject lesson.”
Gayle Sloan, chief executive officer of Waste Management Association of Australia, told Fairfax Media: “The issue is not the industry. Rather, the issue lies with the packager choosing to make a product that they know does not have an end use.”

OK. Point taken. Researching glass keep cups. Looks like the original keep cups are still the best option.

Re: Who is obsessive about their coffee??
hmmm, the discount thing doesn't fly. I sell coffee at my Ice Cream Shop, and the cups I use cost me just under $0.15c each. So if you're expecting 50c or $1 off, that's just not going to happen. I doubt many people will care if their preferred coffee is $4.50 or $4.35.

Re: Who is obsessive about their coffee??
you mean you walk around with a ceramic coffee mug on you ?
impractical to say the least
yes, at work take a mug to the coffee shop, but when I'm shopping or whatever I'm not gonna walk around with a mug in my hand.

Re: Who is obsessive about their coffee??
The discount is usually 50c on the high end of prices, so a $4 coffee becomes $3.50. What gets me is places that aren’t doing a discount but seem to have taken it as licence to surcharge if you don’t use a reusable cup, so $4.50 normal and $4 with cup, and that’s a small/regular coffee. Luckily there’s so much choice I can vote with my feet.
It doesn’t make financial sense to offer discounts really, it’s more of an “our business is green” statement than anything.

Well it's nice to see your effort to be more environmentally friendly revolves around the burning of fossil fuels! Reminds me of the time our Labrador was interfering with my ex-wife while she was trying to make cupcakes for the RSPCA, so she kicked him!
