How is this GST for overseas items under 1k going to work ?
Who understands what is being imposed in 1 months time and can explain it to the rest of us ? I figure big players like Ebay will charge us and extra 10% at checkout but what happens if you buy some pickups at Bestbassgear ? Ie a small player that isn't registered for GST ? Will Auspost hold it back and harass us for extra money ?

It's not going to work, it's going to cause utter chaos everywhere, amazon and other companies are going to pretend Australia doesn't exist until it gets cleared up, and the only person happy will be Gerry Harvey who got his mates to create a ridiculous tax on consumers which will *cost more than it takes in*
In short, nobody has any idea because they're still madly scrambling, but it's going to be bad.

Shipito and similar services where you have a US address should allow you to get around the GST

this is all on Gerry Harvey, he's been on about it for ten years. Won't work.
Amazon have blocked Aussies from the US store. No one will buy from the Oz Amazon store coz it's way overpriced so Amazon will have to charge GST from it's US site or pull stumps here.
Once again Turnbull backs the uber rich to the detriment of EVERY Australian citizen...
It's like Trunbull wants us to be a lone state only buying and selling from within
Ummm global economy.....

For something large like a bass in a hard case Shipito prices are around half what you'd pay going direct to the courier company, because they can take advantage of a corporate account with bulk discounts.

Amazon's stated reason are a smokescreen. Amazon already handles different sales taxes in 47 US states and copes with VAT charged on sales from the US to the UK. The could do something for sales to Aust if they put their minds to it.
Blaming to Govt alone on this oversimplifies the problem this time.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is actually about Amazon trying to redirect customers to their local Amazon, to force them to pay the higher prices on the local site, or at least try and improve revenue for the Australian business given the huge commitment Amazon have made to Australia this year in facilities and headcount.tearalong wrote: ↑01 Jun 2018, 14:26Amazon's stated reason are a smokescreen. yeah Gerry we are all buying direct from overseas because the 10%gst on your price is the only difference in price lol
Maybe if you only made a 200% markup your prices might be more competitive, it ain't the GST you greedy billionaire,

Hmm.... free trade anyone? Don't we have agreements with the US? Aren't the Libs the party of free trade? Isn't it the answer to everything free trade, jobs and growth?BazzBass wrote: ↑01 Jun 2018, 13:09this is all on Gerry Harvey, he's been on about it for ten years. Won't work.

Anyway, I buy my ebooks for my Kindle from US Amazon currently. I will be fascinated to see how quickly new titles go on the Oz Amazon when I use it the first time and what they cost. I don't really care about the GST, I f the service is worse I will be p!ssed.
Happiness is .......a Telebass and 500W.
