I wouldn't ship to address not on their eBay account. Ask if they could update their account info. I'd also ask for some ID.... esp Swiss proof of identity/documentation.

Good suggestion

Thanks guys, some good suggestions there. Will ask him to update the address on eBay, and also ask for some proof of ID that shows he lives in Switzerland. Regardless, I certainly won't ship until the money has cleared in Paypal and I've transferred it from Paypal into my bank account.

Well, buyer has paid in full and I've withdrawn the funds from PayPal to my bank account, so will box it up and send to Geneva next week with signature on delivery. Ebay kindly emailed me a copy of the chat I had with them about my address concerns, so that should protect me if the buyer claims I didn't send to Texas.

Update: I planned to use Interparcel who offer very competitive international shipping rates (they have bulk deals with all the major players) however their fine print says that they won't carry stringed musical instruments. Before I read that, their best quote to Switzerland was just under $500.

So then I looked at Smartsend who also do international stuff these days, and their rates were $600+. I then tried Pack and Send, who now offer a DIY online service with pickup, insurance and signature on delivery for international parcels, via DHL. Including insurance and a signature at the other end, they were only $380. The parcel was picked up from me on Wednesday, and according to the tracking is being delivered today - I'm more than happy with that price and service, given the Ampeg is bigger than most basses and the parcel weighed 19.2kg (very heavy case and heavy duty shipping carton).

Now just need to see if everything is ok when it arrives.

The money is out of my Paypal account and safely in my bank account, and the buyer and I have communicated via eBay messaging about 10 times now. I guess if he'd hacked someone else's eBay account the real person would have twigged by now, so given all our comms are held in eBay's system I'm feeling safe about the transaction.

The bass has been delivered in Switzerland, and the buyer has posted feedback - "Excellent item, fast shipping, great communication, very recommended! !!!"

Seems that my initial concerns were unfounded, but it was useful to share my concerns with the forum and discuss our thoughts on this scenario. Thanks again for being a great bunch of blokes (and sheilas)

Good to hear Mark.
It's unfortunate that we need to be so wary these days given that there are so many scammers!

Did they update their eBay address?
How did they respond to asking for ID?

He explained that his registered ebay address is in the US so he can buy things from Yanks who won't ship internationally - the address is a relative, who on-ships for him. After he'd paid and I'd transferred the funds out of Paypal to my bank account, and eBay confirmed as far as they're concerned it is a legit sale, then I didn't bother asking for any further proof of ID.
