Your FAVOURITE and LEAST FAVOURITE Aussie Songs ??

Post by BassLine » 26 Jan 2018, 09:28

Happy Australia Day everybody! The Radio Stations are playing lots of Aussie music this long weekend, from Paul Kelly to AC/DC.

What are your FAVOURITE and your LEAST FAVOURITE Aussie songs?

I like 'Galleries of Pink Galahs' to describe the country.

Maybe not the worst but I like a fair bit of Cold Chisel but 'Working Class Man' annoys me.

Had to go with two of each.

Best. Cattle and Cane, the Go-Betweens, and My Island Home by Warumpi Band

Such a hard choice. I'm going with songs that I'd use to illustrate an Aussie sound and perspective to people from overseas.

Special Mention....Am I ever going to see your face again, Angels.

Worst - What About Me and What About Me - who really cares, no one could save this dirge.

I don't even care which version it is. I must have been about ten when the original came out, and I hated it from the very time I heard the singer whinging and bitching and complaining and moaning about some share that he was supposed to be entitled to. I mean, if the shop owner is ignoring you, riot and trash the place or something, don't go home and write the second worst song ever recorded The worst recorded song, of course, is Shannon Noll's version, wherein he took what was already abysmal and gave it the angsty ambience of a VB loaded bogan not getting a root at a B&S ball.

Special Mention...Any other version of What About Me that's out there.

Down Under by Men at Work, may as well be a Christmas Carol for me in January, it just grates me.
I don't know why, maybe I've just heard it too many times... my old man loved Men at Work.

For songs I love?
Pickapart - Johnny Butler is always a safe bet with the missus.

I've been on a Downsyde binge since their new album dropped. An oldie but a goodie;

The Kill Devils Hills are a band that deserves a lot more attention than they get.

King Parrot for when you'd had too much rum 3 hours ago. I love the finish of this clip

It was a world wide hit -

"Shaddap You Face" went to #1 for eight weeks on the Australian pop charts in 1980. It reached Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 21 February 1981 and stayed there for three weeks until 14 March 1981—keeping Ultravox's single Vienna out of the top spot for all the three weeks it was there. The song became the 15th biggest hit of 1981 in the UK.[4]

"Shaddap You Face" was also Number 1 in 11 other countries. There have been over 50 different foreign language cover versions, and hundreds more published informally on YouTube with new versions being recorded and uploaded every year. The original release sold over 6 million copies and has remained the most successful Australian-produced single in Australian music history for 33 years straight, with sales of over 450,000 copies. It was Australia's first triple platinum recording by the old count of 100,000 units equaling platinum status, which has since changed to 75,000 units, then 50,000, and finally 70,000 units.[citation needed] In 2002, "Shaddap You Face" also overtook Slim Dusty's 22-year longevity record for "A Pub with No Beer", which went to Number 1 in 1957, and was Australia's first gold record and only gold 78rpm record.

In the US, the song peaked at No. 53 in the summer of 1981 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 43 on the Cash Box Top 100,[5] and No. 24 on Record World. However, it was regularly played on the Dr. Demento show to the point of being No. 6 on the year-end Funny 25 that year. In Canada, "Shaddap You Face" reached number two for two weeks.

Lou Monte released a cover of the song in 1981. Other notable cover versions have been done by KRS-One (hip-hop), EMF (British), Andrew Sachs (Manuel, of Fawlty Towers), Werner Böhm, alias: Gottlieb Wendehals (German, title: Mensch, ärger dich nicht), Sheila (French, titled: Et Ne La Ramène Pas), Dingetje (Dutch, titled: Houtochdiekop), De Strangers (muziekgroep (Dutch, titled: Agget Mor Fret), Volker Rosin und die Lollypops (German, titled: Hörst du nicht die Kuh - Muh!), Franco Franchi with the duo, Franco e Ciccio (Italian, title: Alì Alì Alè), an Aboriginal language version by Gnarnyarrhe Waitairie, a Papua New Guinean version by The Breeze Band (title: "Pasim Pes Bilong Yu" – pidgin version), and even a spoken word interpretation by Samuel L. Jackson.

Hates...
Cold Chisel - No Sense. Hated it when I heard it as a kid. Didn't listen to Chisel for another 15 years properly because it. Still rubs me up the wrong way now.
Anything by Savage Garden.
Collette - You can ring my bell.

Late to this thread but it's a fun one.

Least Favourites:
* Land Down Under or whatever that Men At Work thing is called
* That Paul Kelly one about Bradman
* Too many INXS to list
* That song about cane fields and thunderstorms
* And if I hear any more about throwing arms around you .....

Most Favourites:
* Nick the Stripper

* Rats In The Walls

* Coulda chosen lots of things off this album, but let's go with Shylock

* And possibly my favourite: Golden Miles (we cover part of this is a medley)

* Norm Roue on some fat slide (fantastic band live)

I'll stop now before I get carried away by The Saints, The Thought Criminals, Tactics, Chain, The Coloured Balls .... so many many many
