NAD - BAEZ 300 watt all tube

Post by tde » 08 Aug 2012, 16:32

This is the amp i had to buy.

300 watt all tube, handmade by Michael Sampson of Sampson industries in Newcastle, NSW. I was told that there were only 6 of these amps made during 1999-2000. Mike said he stopped making them as they were just too expensive for him to make. It came with the matching quadbox, which I haven't pulled apart to check what type of speakers etc.

power section is 6x6550's, preamp is 12AX7's (3 i'm assuming...haven't looked there yet either. Will upload better pics soon)

It sounds great!! Similar but different to an SVT, has a really nice presence/clarity to it that seems unique compared to some of the other tube amps i have played. Also seems nicely matched to the cab that it came with...with loads of power as you would expect. All in all - Awesome!

Background reading on BAEZ amps:

Mike also made alot of guitar amps during the 70s/80s/90s and i am lead to believe he has just started making them again.

Anyway... more pictures to come.

Love the colour of the tolex! How is the weight, compared to say, an SVT?

Hey mark....yeah she looks even better in person.

The weight is an issue for the weight conscious bass player. Without knowing exact figures, i would say it's a fair bit less than an SVT? An SVT is close to 40KG's right?

This is more comparable in weight to my old Mesa 400+. I will weigh it when i get it back....its been borrowed for a recording session already haha!

Yeah i have heard great things about the old guitar amps - apparently they are a two channel affair with JCM800/Fender twin style sounds?

I had a Baez 300w all valve bass head in the early 80s. Toured with it for years and it never let me down. It had a fabulous warm sound.

Great to see they're back in production!
Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Yep it's the real deal, still loving the sound. The cab is awesome aswell.

The head weighs bang on 20 kg so reasonable for a 300 watt tube amp.

I know someone who has one sitting in his spare bedroom not being used. Its a Baez from the 70/80's era with the original cab too. I've told him, when he's ready I'll take it from him. Been waiting about 3 year s so far.

Ahh mate whatever you can get one for really. As I said mine is one of 6, so you can't really pick one up any day of the week. I haven't seen older models for sale ever, either.

^I played this one before tde bought it. Not an SVT clone but a classic tube amp all its own. Mick isn't making these now as they are just too expensive to justify, although a fleet of new 50W BAEZ guitar amps are nearing completion and will be available through RTN Studios in Newcastle.

On a side note, he had my 1973 SVT in for a service recently and basically said it was the pinnacle of bass amps - this guy knows his gear

Ahhh small world mate! Yep she is fairly precious. Would love to hear it through an ampeg 810 at an outdoor gig... I haven't had it past a low idle at the gigs I've been doing

Just registered cos I was doing a search on this amp, and this thread came up.
I've had one like this for 6 or 7 years, so I thought I'd introduce myself via this thread, it's pretty
old I know, and no one will likely return to it, so it's all for my amusement...and free therapy session, haha

I bought it off a guy named Andy, along with his 8x10 usa ampeg cab, yup sounds awesome..
He said it was custom made for him by Mike, but it looks the same as the one above except I threw away
the wooden surround box thing it came in, it had a blue furry cover, rather ugly.
So maybe it wasn't a custom job, maybe I got it confused with 'ordered' this model, but no mention
has been made of far right knob, which is a compressor, also I reckon it weighs closer to 40kg's than 20,
huge trannies. When I first got this and brought it rehearsal the sound of the band changed instantly.
I made my return to playing in a band after a 28years hiatus, but as a guitar player, standards were a
bit higher than where I was at, so I opted for bass to 'break into' the scene so to speak. I already had a
bass guitar so I bought a Warwick head and cab and was accepted as a member, soon they was bitching
about my tone, so I upped the ante and bought a Mark 4x10 cab...then I was bitching about my tone...
that's when I came across the Baez/ampeg combo...love at first..you know, well 6 months later, I couldn't
stand the git players tones, so I jumped and went back to guitar playing, being all warmed and all.
These days this amp gets switched on for a quick blast about 3 times a year, such a waste I know, but
it's hard to part with something so good I'm such a gear hog, plus I own 5 basses for the hell of it anyway,
though I mostly use an SWR blonde for quiet jams and looping stuff....yes, a guitar player mainly, I have
nearly 50 guitars, acoustic electric folk type things laying about, it's like my own amusement park.
That's it....I didn't know it was called a NAD, one more thing, I recall Andy saying it was based on early 1970?
SVT....so just trying to determine whether this was a variant of the above model or the exact same model,
whichever it is, it's the best I've ever heard so doesn't matter!
