Second Combo or Ext Cab

Post by Heath » 25 Sep 2018, 18:13

so after i move on my 410 and tte im wanting to get another 1x12, and im tossing up between a few options, i already have the markbass CMD 121H, which realisitically suits every gig i do (its a monster little amp) and just because i can id like a second cab for when im on bigger stages, do i go the simple route and get a traveller (or ninja) 1x12, a second CMD 121H combo, or a CMD 121P combo?

the idea of getting a second combo appeals to me as i have a history of destroying amps (unwillingly) so having a second combo there is a good backup  , whereas a second cab, while cheaper, is only useful if i have the existing combo with me

figured i could run two cmd's like this, but put my amp wedge between the two to tilt the 121P up

121H is a killer cab and does what you need plus allows dialling out the horn when you run both. If you like the CMD121H don’t look at the CMD121P you’ve found your sound. Two amps IMO is a waste but if you want backup sure, you could also get fancy with stereo setup but most people get tired of it quickly.

Glued I seem to recall but not hard to change or just remove altogether, a couple of threads on TB about it.

If you're interested in a second amp as a redundancy thing, perhaps another CMD 121H (since that's the sound you like). Disconnect the second CMD 121H from it's speaker and use it as an extension cab. You drop ohms so you'll get full value from your amp, and if something goes pop you have a super quick fall back. And you don't have the fiddliness of balancing two amps. I tried this (with Markbass combos) and it drove me insane very quickly.

Nice. The ninja is twice the power handling though so you’re not pushing it very hard run like that. Would make a kick ass stand-alone cab with that much power handling and sensitivity.

Did you have to move the logo around?

This rig sounds huge, just about to do our last set tonight and it’s just massive, I’ve ordered another Mark stand too so I wedge both cabs up when I want, yeah I did have to move the badge

Hey Mr Heath
Ive heard those Markbass 1 x 12 combo's are pretty good.
But Im not sure if I could make do with just one single 1 x 12 speaker for most gigs but Im happy to be proven wrong.
.
Have you considered the CMD super combo KI as another additional option - these things on paper seem like the ticket.
1000 watts into 4 ohms is pretty standard these days - and meaning not disrespect - maybe less chance of destroying the amp also.

Yeah, Alain Caron’s setup, I couldn’t find any photos of anyone using 2 cmd121h’s...and the super k1’s are very similar in design

I went from using a bergantino nv412 with markbass tte500 to the cmd121h in a 5 peice and the cmd keeps up on its own, seriously its an amazing little combo, the 121p doesn’t have the low end presence the 121h does which is why I went the 121h, add the second cab and its one of the biggest sounding rigs I’ve owned

A second cab will give 6dB additional maximum output. So will a second combo, but a cab is considerably less expensive.
