Is there a bass overdrive that can go...

Post by FunkyJase » 15 Jun 2018, 17:48

...from minimal tube-like dirt all the way to balls out death?

So far the Solid Gold FX Beta Superdrive II has been one of the best overdrives I've had for that tubey, fat drive sound but I wish it could go just a bit lighter. Maybe if it had a blend it could work...

So - looking for recommendations for a bass overdrive that can do light sparkle to balls out without colouring the tone tone...

Have tried:
Bass Soul Food
BB Bass Pre
Ts9B
Boss ODB3
Bass Big Muff
MXR Bass Overdrive

Dunno about not colouring your tone tone ... but the Darkglass Vintage Ultra certainly has a lot of options -- 4 band freq selectable eq, saturation controls and blend.

It does colour the tone a little or a lot depending on how you dial it, but the VT bass does it all. A little bit of tubey grit or ballsy fuzz and everything in between. The think I like the most about it is the way it drives. A lot of bass drives get that really high end wispy hair that I can't stand, well the VT bass doesn't do that. It's a lot more I guess vintage sounding and doesn't have that super treble high end fuzz going on, unless you want it to. The VTDI also has a blend control, which would be very useful if you want to retain your tone.

VMT or B7K are a good place to start. VMT for mids focus, B7K for scooped.

Blend it with your dry signal with a Boss LS-2 Line Selector. Works an absolute treat. Ultra versatile. Solved all of my OD problems.

Why not getting one with tube/s. Meatsmoke does that easily. My one...DHA VT1, can do subtle to balls out (not as insane but) death overdrive.

I think you just answered your own question there bud.
There's plenty of small blend pedals or the cheap LS-2 to tinker with.

FWIW, to answer your question (I've been thru waaaaay too many dirt pedals)
Empress Multidrive, Dr. Scientist Elements and MI Audio Tubezone are my fave's for swiss-army knife pedals that can cover anything from light OD to full on distortion. I sold the other two, kept the Tubezone. Reason being, I find most full on distortions lack a bit of deep low end with high gain settings.

But, personally my thinking is that each pedal is designed to do one or two tones really well on any guitar or bass.
Anything more than that is a gamble. I favour using different pedals for OD, Distortion and fuzz, as I've not found a pedal that can do them all without sounding like a compromise.

Ive tried it and listened to a lot of demos etc and to my ears it sounds very mid scooped. The mid scoop works with a lot of styles but I really hate it for my style he he
