Genz STL900 vs Magellan 800

Post by CrayZee_Bass » 10 Jun 2018, 22:20

Hi all,

wondering if anyone has owned both heads and/or done a comparison?

I like my STL900 and wonder how close the Magellan is or isn't to it?

Cheers,
Mark.

LOVE my Magellan, but never played an STL900 so can’t tell you how similar (or not) they are.

Michael

I had a STL600 a few years ago, had a Magellan 800 a while back too.
Similar in that they've similar controls, sorta in the same universe, but.....

I didn't get along with the STL at all. Far too pillowy, boomy, bloomy.... whatever. I couldn't get a useable sound outta it.
I REALLY tried too.
Took it to a few gigs and rehearsals... each time the band members were aghast... such a boomy mushy mess.
Tried cutting mids, bass etc.. could get an ok sound, but very feckin far from optimal.
Now..... all this is just my experience.
I realize many many others have had mucho successo with em. Good on em. It just didn't suit me.
The Magellan on the other hand was great. Very sculptable, great tone options, good drive... plenty of power.

Again, it wasn't MY cuppa tea, but...... I would've been happy keeping it, unlike the Streamliner.

Reiterating, ..the STL are very popular and well made amps, that suit many ppl just fine,
It just didn't suit me.

I don't own a Magellan but do own a Streamliner 900. From what I've recently read, the eq acts quite differently to your typical class D head and is quite interactive i.e a change to the bass level may also impact mids. Also, if you have the gain low and the pre-vol high this will get a cleaner more modern sound than having the gain high and the pre-vol low where it will sound more compressed and some of the highs will go too. I also read the the curve for each eq point is wide unlike many modern heads with the Q is narrower.

A lot of players tend to set the controls in a similar way - bass at 9 or 10 o'clock, mids at 1 to 3 o'clock (600 or 2.5kHz settings)and treble at 10 or 11 o'clock. The gain and pre-vol is generally set at 12 o'clock or with more pre-vol & less gain to get cleaner sound and vice versa.

I’ve owned a STL 900 for awhile and heavily gigged it. Great amp. Very full tone which could get too pillowy/bassy so always had the bass dialed back to 9-10 o’clock. Also tube swapped to get slightly better definition with more pronounced mids and treble. Alas i did sell it eventually.

I currently own the MG800. Love it to bits. Can go from warm grit to clean & defined and anything inbetween. Has weight to notes unlike other class D amps. The best class D ever produced by Jeff w/o a doubt. He really did listen to customer feedback. If the Shuttle and Streamliner had a baby, it would be the Magellan. The best of both those amps.
