purchased trace 4x12 and mystery amp

Post by Kenney » 04 Jan 2018, 07:55

hey guys

i just picked up a trace elliot 4x12 cab for a couple of hundred last night and he threw in a amplifier that i have never seen before and doesnt come up on a quick google.

it is branded "Amp Doctor Rock n Roll". it is rack mounted in some sort of roady case.

anyone know about these amps? on the front it has 2 inputs, gain, slope, treble, mid(hi and lo), bass,(4 band eq i guess?) and volume. on the back it has a huge heat sink, 2 output jacks and a xlr output and a power in. ring any bells for anyone, it seems pretty loud , louder than my little bastard anyway. its a bit crackly and the fan is noisy but it works.

i will try to get some photos up of it anyway but the cab and the little bastard sound AWESOME from the quick little play i had this morning before the kids got up probably because i was too loud!.

Is the 4x 12 the cab that matches the V4 V-type Amps?

The amp might have been put together or just have his sticker by an amp repair man?

The speaker box was mine,it’s awesome, just too old to lift it,I have the matching v4 head .
The head was made for me by The Amp Doctor ,aka Paul Pallister, down the coast, and was used until I got the holy grail V4 and yes they really are that good.Paul would have done point to point and would not have made any shortcuts making it for me as we are good friends.

Any chance of getting any details on the amp?

Yes the cab weighs a ton! I am going to put some casters on it but if i ever start needing to move it around i might make my own cabs as 2x12's x 2 to make more it manageable.

I bought the cab/amp of a bloke in brisbane. That wasnt you was it onehandclapping? Or did you own it a while ago?

The plaque on the back has nothing in it. Either faded or removed? Do you remember the specs?

It really does sound great with both amps.

Regards

I owned the amp and box probably 12/15 years ago, used it with Mick Hadley and the Shakers,it’s plenty loud enough.I have owned a couple of these cabs they always had castors on them, think a cover as well.At a guess it was 800 Watts think it was 8 olms or was it 4 :banghead:
Probably just check the fuse first.
I sold it to a family that had all the kids playing an instrument.

Pulled it out of the rack case today to have a look inside.

It looks a bit 'amateurish' i guess would be a word i would use. Wiring not secured, cardboard and silicon everywhere and a loose piece of cardboard as a fan director over thr heat sink. Had 2 valves in the input stage and the the slope knob is not connected. I forgot to take photos sorry!

Used some contact cleaner on the 4 noisy pots and checks that the valves were ok and now there is jo crackling. Bit of dust on the fan blades which was unbalancing it and making it noisy which i cleaned up.

I dont know how much power it puts out but its loud and and it breaks up if you wind the gain, a bit like the valve grind on the ashdown abm ive used before.

So all in all a 4x12 trace brick box and an old half valve amp for a couple of hundred bucks, pretty happy!

PS i put some casters on the cab do its more manageable.

Sounds like someone has been inside messing,Paul’s work is second to none.He is also the Fender fixit tech on the GC.I was actually going to purchase it when it was on Gumtree for my son in laws music room but I was too lazy to make the drive into Brissy
