Complete rig simulator in a pedal board is my go to.

Tuner - Preamp - compressor - cabinet simulator - noise gate

can go direct to FOH and if need be, i have enough eq flexibility to get what i need.

bummer about the gig though OP, i also tap my fingers on the strings to keep time so i feel your pain.

For mine a good pre-amp can boost tone/volume/depth in these circumstances. I go for a Tech 21 VT Bass, Aguilar Tonehammer or Darkglass B3K depending on the gig.
Fender Jazz. Fender Precision. Musicman Stingray. Aguilar. Bergantino. MXR. Tech 21 Darkglass

I plug a sansamp (or other preamp) into the effects return of the amp if possible.
This!
Seconded.

My Sansamp is the core of my tone anyway, i do use a tube head and 810, but on supplied backline, i still get pretty close with the pedal. Ive also just taken my pedal board on shows we've flown to, and im 90% of the way there as soon as i plug in.

Normally shows here in adelaide ill still take my head and cab, ive even had my 810 used as backline.

Maybe try and find a preamp/di pedal you like, and not necessarily a sansamp, ampeg's new one, Darkglass, sadowsky, MXR, EBS, GK Have their new plexi unit with an inbuilt tuner, theres plenty of options.

yeah cool!
I've built a little pedal board that helps with my own rig but should be pretty adaptable with other rigs. Just a cheapo EQ for now but might get a decent pre or Bass EQ sometime in the future... So far the EQ is a HUGE help especially with shitty rooms where I normally cant get a decent sound. I even wonder if all I really need is one of those BMC's by EWS...

Oh yeah it's a passive mute. Im OCD about not leaving my active bass plugged in during breaks and I HATE the sound of the amp when you unplug/plug it in... I used to use the tuner to mute but there was no room :-)

I'm the same about not leaving my bass plugged in and wanting to avoid the dreaded "graunch" sound. You've have to test it out with your amp, but with my Markbasses (which mostly come with no mute switch), if you just pull the plug "one prong" at the amp it will mute everything without a click or graunch and you can do what you want at the guitar end.
