Ampeg SCR-DI

Post by lepparda » 17 Oct 2018, 19:26

Just got one of these after hearing a guy using one in a pub. Very cool pedal if you are after that 70’s Ampeg tone (which I am).

How do they compare to Tech 21 VT Bass?
Will play for food.

Good question as I love the VT Bass and would be the last pedal I'd sell. On first hearing I would say the SCR is a little deeper and sounds great with a P Bass, but I think the VT Bass sounds nicer with the Jazz.

Will update as we go.

For ME, I like the Ampeg better. To my ears it gives me the Ampeg tone better so I sold the VT Bass.

Still need to try with more amp/cab/bass combinations.

I like them both.

Just bought the programmable VT deluxe and it's good to have 6 presets, though I really only need two lol clean and dirty.

^I get very nice sounds from my zoom units (B2.1u and B3) using the Ampeg models.

I can't say to what degree they sound like Ampeg. All I can say is that I like the sounds they make and that works for me.

I do like the SCR-DI design very much, however. If I didn't already have a couple of boxes that work for me, I'd definitely be looking at one of these puppies.

Whats always bafflled me about the Ampeg pedals - is the mid knob is cut and boost at 500 Hz. ( similar also to Ampeg PF350 amp and the Ampeg Combo BA210 )
.
On my SVT 7 Pro I always run it on position 3 - which is 800 Hz cut and boost ( basically the default position ).
The 'P' bass really bites in this position. ( I must mention i use Labella flats 760FS )
Position 2 is set at 450Hz - so occasionally when wanting a more smooth, buttery, woody tone ( or if the room is real middy already ) I'll use this one.
I must mention also- I NEVER use the ultra low for live work.
.
Ive wanted to buy an Ampeg pedal to try with a couple different amps I own, especially a passive eq amp - but sorta not sure if I'll get close to the tone I'm used to.
If the BA210 combo had a 5 position switch i woulda bought one ages ago.

Reading between the lines tho ( also refer Jimmy M on TB ) - I think the SCR-DI and PF-350 are modeled on the legendary Ampeg B15 sound - as opposed to the Ampeg SVT tone ?????
