Line 6 Basses

Post by grumpy_dog666 » 31 Mar 2009, 13:49

i really dig this concept. 1 bass, but you can use the modeling software to make it sound like other basses........

anybody know who has these in stock? or has tried one?

want a P Bass sound, and this is a possibility. also looking at a 62 re-issue MIJ P-Bass.......

any thoughts?

Theres one on eBay at the moment. I think it is a 5er. I've tried these basses and was pretty impressed. The bass itself is totally unremarkable. I find it does passable Pbass, Jazz Bass and Musicman tones and has a few other models mixed in for good measure. As a versatile recording tool, I think it's a good option. It's not a bass I would use as a primary gigging instrument but that just personal preference. I think they are worth checking out. Where are you located?

I played that one. The first thing I noticed is the weight. It easily weighs twice as much, maybe more, as my "not so light" Stingray. That immediately made it a no-go for me as I spend 99.99% of my time playing live, and there's no way I'm going to be comfortable lugging that much weight around the stage.

In terms of playability, it reminded me of my $200 SX. It felt cheap. The money is definitely in the electronics and not the build. It also feels strange at first because there's no pickups to work around ore rest your thumb on, but you get used to that I guess.

I have to admit it did pull some good sounds though. The problem is dialing them up quickly enough. Once again, it wouldn't be a problem for recording but for live use it could prove difficult.

So I guess it depends what you want it for. I can't recommend it for live use. That's my :2c:

Green Bros in Rockhampton had one a couple of years back for over $3K (ouch!)...
I messed around on it for over an hour

P-bass tones were great...Jazz bass tones were pretty great, too...

Ric sounds were uninspiring...

Stingray sound was pretty decent...

but yes, it weighed a LOT! and the complexity of the electronics scared me...

I would buy any MIJ over the line 6. I felt the 6 was a lot of fluff around the fundamental tone. Fo example a small tone with a lot of air around it. I A/B ed it with MIA Jazz and Olp basses and was not impressed at all. I didnt just try it once, i worked at the shop that was selling it so i tried real hard to like it , but not good for live use. In a recording situation it may have been better i feel it would have been too boomy and got swallowed in a mix live. But my opinion.

The MIJ Fenders are excellent quality. Try and get one of the models that has US pickups (they have "US" at the end of the model number)
