1974 Jazz Bass - Bass Centre - thoughts? urgent help required :)

Post by bassmaniac69 » 24 Oct 2018, 22:33

This came up today and I'm gassing bad for it:

https://www.basscentre.com.au/collectio ... vEZ-C2AEyw

It's my birth year, original condition, light weight yadda yadda...

My main concern is if the neck is nitro or ploy - Google searching indicates it is poly, but I've also read reports that it could be nitro. Can anyone shed some light at all?

Also, after some more research the price seems pretty reasonable for that year bass in that condition. Thoughts?

The guys are holding it for me overnight but I need to give them an answer tomorrow :)

Cheers in advance for any help!

You won’t know until to play it. Very tidy bass, lightweight too. Fly down and check it out ASAP.

I've just had a look at the site. From the lack of "yellowing" I'd suggest poly. But, why does it matter if it's nitro or poly? As long as the finish is in good nic and is comfy to play, should be fine. It's lasted this long right?

Me too.

The neck of a 74 will have been sprayed with poly originally and it looks to be still original. They phased out nitro over 68/ 69, as I understand it. They did continue to spray the front of the headstock with nitro into the 70s- my 73 P Bass has nitro on the front of the headstock, but my son's 75 Jazz has poly there.

Thanks gents, I appreciate the quick responses.

Nitro and I don't play well, even on aged bases, my skin reacts after playign it for a while (I sweat a lot and it cause a reaction) hence the question!

And I'd love to fly down of course but no go, it's sight unseen.

I've been given permission to get it if I want, I'll do a bit more thinking and see what i do!

Cheers.

And bought it, could not help myself!

I'll put pics of the adjuster up but looks fine, Darren at the BC sent me lots of pics and gave me a run down.

One owner, purchased new in 1977 (confirmed 1974 by BC), all original, ashtrays, case candy etc.

A little excited TBH...

Now to tell the wife....
