I know Eddie Van Halen used to screw the pickup straight to the body on his Strat, saying it sounded better. Makes a certain amount of sense, with a one pickup instrument. Especially if there is any microphonics in the pickup.
I've had that mod done on one of my P basses - installed a block of mahogany under the P pickup equal to the ideal PU height. Gives it more bottom end - that bass is nicknamed 'The Freight Train'.

I could see that being done for a bridge PU in a PJ that needs more oomph.

How does your current PU sound to YOUR ears?
Is the PU height correct?
Interesting, it really effects the tone.
The Bridge PU sounds thin which is unusual for a dimarzio ultra jazz bridge PU.
The height is way too low. I know this problem since I got the bass. But I was using the p PU exclusively, so I didn't care for it.

I've been tinkering with basses two-thirds of my life, and I've never really thought about the interaction of a magnetic pickup and the resonance of the body, and what possible effect damping this with foam would have... I mean unless the pickup is microphonic, there shouldn't be a current induced by vibrations alone... but most old fender pickups are microphonic to some extent... plus hard mounting a pickup would certainly effect its movement relative to the string (only fractionally I would think, but hey...).

Bass forums are great... :)

Eventually, I got some springs from bunnings, all sorted :hyper:
