[NBD] Krappy Guitars Hockey Bass

Post by godinpants » 13 Jul 2018, 08:10

It's been a while between drinks for me both here AND in the world of new guitars.
Recently I've been playing a little more and had a few interstate shows that involved me borrowing someone else's bass. It becomes a bit of a joke between friends when people start seeing what monstrosities they can get you to play. (fig.1)

After having my hands on this total of 9 strings, i thought about how many strings I DO need, and arrived at the fact that i very rarely use more than 2 strings in any given song. A quick trip to the imagination zone later, I was emailing genius artisan and master crafstman Kevin at Krappy Basses, whose work I've admired for nearly a decade, and set out on a journey to create what he referred to as "quality canadian architecture".

There's a note I should mention somewhere that I'm a fan of ice hockey, and have taken to wearing a hockey jersey at shows as some kind of band uniform - an easy feat as a one piece.

This week I made a trip to the post office to collect this thing of beauty - a 2-string hockey bass.

I was really surprised by the quality of the build - the neck feels great, the frets are super clean. There's a little volume discrepancy between strings, but i can live with that because everything just gets blasted through distortion anyway.
All in all, i paid about $300AU for this, $100 of which was shipping. An absolute bargain for a custom order and something built by hand.
The biggest hurdle in playing it is not having anywhere to rest my hand - i usually either have my arm on the body of my bass or hold on to the bridge with my pinky. But, it is very playable and my music isn't about technical proficiency by a long stretch.
Will attempt a recording this afternoon after work and add it to this post.
But for those interested in my music in the mean time - this link comes with a language warning: https://soundcloud.com/godinpants

Sometimes when the pyrotechnics guy is having a good day you need it.
