[NBD] Lakland 55-94 USA Deluxe

Post by swalexbass » 24 May 2018, 01:15

Just having a visit to Korea and picked up this beauty from a high-end bass shop. Lakland 55-94 USA Deluxe in trans red colour, with the old Bartolini electronics instead of the Lakland electronics. in This is one of the most versatile basses I’ve ever played, as it can brew up any kind of tone you desire. Really can’t wait to plug this in and try it when I get back home... Sure to be my main workhorse with its versatility second to none.

The specs as below:
- Body: Swamp Ash
- Finish: Trans Red Flame Maple Top
- Neck: Quartersawn Maple
- Fingerboard: Figured Birdseye Maple
- Electronics: Bartolini Cut and boost, 3-band EQ Preamp with Bartolini Pickups (HS)
- Controls: Pickup Blend; Master Volume; Pull/Push (Passive/Active); 3-way, Bridge-Pickup Coil-tap Toggle Switch

They're a versatile bass for sure. I have a Skyline 5502 which is great - but....

5502s are missing a passive tone control (don't know if the USA models have it?). Which for me is more important than the 3 band EQ. So recently I had mine converted to passive. I now have Vol/Pickups Blend/Passive Tone Control/3-way Bridge Pickup coil switch.

Passive is working great for my needs and with the bridge coil switching it's still tonally very versatile. I may at some point install a 3 band pre with a passive tone control but I'm not missing the onboard EQ so far

I believe that tone controls are inactive in the lakland bartolini, not sure about the Lh-3 though. I personally think bartolini goes really well with the maple fingerboard because bartolini warms up the bright maple fingerboard sound a bit, to perfection!

That bridge coil switch is so versatile, I agree. So many possible combinations to emulate p, pj, 60s j, 70s j, MM etc.

I loved mine and do miss it. The neck feels so nice to play. The USA modelhas this flatter neck that feels very similar to my vintage 64 Fender. Truly a great instrument. I was playong a USA MTD 535 the other day and remember thinking my USA lakland felt and sounded better to me.
Alas i am back to only a 5502 model these days as it was really hard to justify the extra expense of the USA model. Cheers

You're right, the neck profile is really comfortable! I haven't had the pleasure of owning a real original vintage Fender, but this neck profile does really remind me of my MTD USA Saratoga which I sold a few months back. Somewhere between a Fender Jazz and an MTD, imo. How does the 5502 compare to the USA model, from your experience?

The 5502 is very similar to the 5594; aside from the cosmetic differences and the colour choices.
The USA versions use higher quality timber for the body, neck is Quartersawn v flatsawn maple and the headstock is 3-5mm thicker to eliminate dead spots.
Licensed tuners on the 5502
Same electronics and Bridge design.
New 5594 have more options for Deluxe top and wood selection
I have had an MTD 535 for about a week now and so far would say it has a sweeter top end - buffered pickups; different mid range character and I prefer the MTD neck profile. (Must get around to doing a NBD soon)
MTD 535, Brubaker KXB Extreme 5, Lakland 5594, Sadowsky Metro MS5, Stingray 5, Yamaha TRB6P (For Sale), West Fretless 5, Fender RW J, NS WAV4
Bergantino B|Amp,
Bergantino AE212, AE112

The sound of the 5594 and the 5502 waspretty muchthe same. It was a reeal please playing the 5594 so it felt like a better experienceover the 5502. But when the sound of them is so similar i could not justify the extra expense and sold the 5594.
One day i will get another 5594.
