Stingray 3 band clank

Post by narcdor » 17 Feb 2018, 13:37

Continuing on from discussion on the trade thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=23823

I’ve gone from sunbeams to chromes hoping to tame the clank a bit, but it still rings out in that way I find unpleasant which might wear down on the chromes as they are still fresh but it and loses a little of the growl I liked from rounds.

So I have put the sunbeams back on while I track down some cobalt EB flats. Looking at Tony Levin videos he is using a 3 band and not plucking over the pickup, but I notice I’m using the pickup as a thumb anchor so moving it up towards where I usually play on a P really helps. Then I looked closer and Tony seems to not use the tip of his finger more rolls his wrist towards the neck and uses the side of his finger to pluck, like double bass. Voila! All the clank is gone but the rich thick mids and lows are there in spades with nickel rounds.

Now I’m practicing anchoring the side of my thumb to the pickguard for E string playing and using proper thumb on next string down technique and it’s sounding fantastic!

So there you have it, I was the problem.

I've been using the zero mod thumbrests too. On the SR5 it allows me to get my fingers up in front of the fretboard side of the pickup. I've been surprised how much nicer the tone is up there from where one traditionally might play on the stingray
