NBD: Gibby EB-3

Post by irvinz » 08 Jan 2018, 13:46

An over due post. Its been over a year since i've had a new bass day.

On a recent work trip to Japan i went looking for a nice old acoustic, however i decided i couldn't take the risk of not being able to hand carry it on the plane, and set out looking for a Fender Japan Mustang.

I only found one, and it was in the same shop as what i eventually bought. I've wanted one since playing one at the Swop shop in Melbourne, and there was a really clean one up for sale here in that same time period, both were solid headstocks.

Now i need to spend some time looking for a bridge cover, to hide the fact it doesnt have the original bridge (massive holes can be seen where the mounting post should be), a case that works without spending big $$$

and figure out if the pickup selector is in that format, no discolouration indicate that a varitone selector was in that spot previously.

and an appropriate output jack plate

There are aftermarket bridges to replace the Gibby 3 point bridge that bolt straight into the standard mounting holes - Babicz and Hipshot for example

Rolling Stoned | The Volts | Doors Alive | Bonza | The Vinyl Beats

Basses: Nash, Fender, Duesenberg, Greco, Ibanez
Rig: Fender, Ampeg

Endorsing artist: Fender; Cave Passive Pedals

Congratulations on a Gibson Bass.
I am no expert on these but think the slot heads are 70- 72.
They have a reputation for good mudbuckers.
The Schaller bridge would be a major step forward in performance. It looks like a roller bridge- they are really good IMO.
Small point- the TRC should I have EB3 on it, I think.
Also I would be surprised if the switch were original.

If you want to ask some guys who really know about these basses- join The Last Bass Outpost and ask- they are very friendly.

I really like that slotted headstock. Are the tuners original? Could you show us a pic of the back of the headstock?

It is 1970.

TRC, yeah, i think it was quite inconsistent, loads of pictures on the internet don't have it, 50% maybe?
it looks old enough to be from the correct period, screws have the same head on the screws on the mini humbucker.
(thankfully im not a collector!)

i'll check out the forum later this week! not sure if i should join yet another forum lol.

They look like rotomatics with slightly bigger posts and buttons. Cool stuff.
