There's a hole in my bass

Post by Shadowfax » 22 Dec 2017, 13:35

I have got a Fender Flea bass. It is excellent, great tone and playability.

I was adjusting the truss rod, took off the scratch plate and found this.

Any ideas?

If I had to guess, I would same that is a datum hole they use as a reference for machining etc to locate the body on a fixture/nest or similar.

Hole to hide drugs when you are traveling.

But seriously, I pretty sure it's a datum hole.

no way I'd fit my stash in that teensy hole :)

That hole ruined my plan to leave the pickguard off my 3ts mim Jazz. really poor Fender. I don't think the USA models have this hole.

Thanks guys,

I guessed as much, however, I have to say I have never seen this on any of my previous basses.

Yeah considering people's desires to modify basses, run them with the PG off etc this is an interesting choice. I'm sure there is a more discreet way to do this.

None of my basses have this hole either.

I'm pretty sure all the Mexican Fender bodies have similar holes. The '00 Jazz I used to own definitely did. I'd heard it was to differentiate them from the US versions.

theres no need to drill a hole for machining purposes, body blanks would be mounted in the mill against stops to ensure each one is inserted properly, that way when starting each program on the mill the turret would zero in a standard position relative to the machine not the body blank purely for efficiency purposes, so my guess it would be to prevent it being passed off as a more expensive model or true vintage

I just searched for 'mexican jazz bass body' and all the pictures that came up (that were actually Mexican ones) had similar holes in the same position.
