SOLD: Extremely rare vintage 1967 Ampeg SB-12 fliptop bass guitar amplifier - the Motown sound

Post by Aussie Mark » 14 Aug 2018, 20:26

I've owned this Ampeg 1967 SB-12 since 2010 when I purchased it from Paul Christie (Mondo Rock, The Party Boys). It had been converted from 7686 power tubes to 6L6 in 2004 by Mark Grgic (Megtronics), and that mod coupled with the conversion from 110v to 240v by Grant Wills (Valve Heaven) in 2010 means the power output is now slightly more than the original 22 watts - probably around 30-35 watts or thereabouts (the 6L6 power stage has more clean headroom that the 7686, and the 240v output transformer has heavier windings, both of which add some audible volume over the original. Still, this is not enough to gig with a drummer, but is more than enough for acoustic gigs, duos, and of course it is a great amp for recording, given it is the little brother of the classic B-15N that can be heard on the majority of 1960s hit singles and albums. A copy of the schematic with the 2004 modifications is included with the sale, as is the original 110v output transformer.

In addition to the modifications mentioned above, other items that I have replaced with new replica parts from Fliptops.net since 2010 are -

* A new Jensen C12N speaker to replace the non-standard Etone that was in it when I bought it
* New latches for the cabinet
* New cabinet corners
* New sealing strips where the amp joins the cab
* A new Ampeg logo on the cabinet
* New cabinet feet (between the cab and the dolly)
* New handle
* New control knobs
* New acoustic foam inside the cabinet
* New dust cover

The above replacement parts and the 240v output transformer conversion cost me more than $800, so you're getting a vintage fliptop that looks the part and performs perfectly.

This amp sounds wonderfully fat and warm when pushed, which is why it is such a fabulous recording amp. Recording sample here -

I can't imagine there would be any more than a handful of these in Australia, so this is your chance to own a rare piece of bass history.

Price for OzBassers only is $1,499. Pickup is at Melrose Park in Sydney (near West Ryde/Meadowbank). I am happy to accept payment via instalments on a lay-by basis (ie. the amp is yours once the full amount has been paid).
