Maxgroover's 6 String Modern Jazz - #025

Post by Phil » 24 Jul 2012, 19:29

Matt ordered this a few months back, he wanted to have a modern 6 string Jazz Basss with a spalted top, 24 frets, Nordstrand Big Splits and an OBP preamp in it. It sounded prettty cool for a project so I started working on the CAD drawings for this. It took a bit of time until I came up with what I wanted to have for a headstock and the body shape.

Image

This is the configuration choices I sent Matt to decide what we were going to do with the headstock, I liked 5+1 clover tuners better, Matt prefered 4+2 better, he was right, the 5 clovers were making it pretty tight on the bass side, too far up the headstock and I didn't feel that we should have extended the headstock anyway, we could have gotten more balance problems by doing that

Once that was done I created the templates on the CNC router

We then went on Ebay and started shopping for a top, we settled on this block of spalt. I then went to my man Bill's place and resawed it into a bunch of tops

and then the woodwork started :)

Sanding down the fingerboard radius

and rough cutting the back of the neck, once thats done the rest of the neck is shaped by hand. That's it for now, stay tuned for the next 6 weeks to see the rest :D

The 4+2 headstock definitely makes more sense, I must say.

Looking good Phil. What's the string spacing on this and what bridge will be installed on it?

I gotta say I'm pretty excited about this one! Phil's been great all the way along, being especially patient as we selected the top and as I changed my mind on various things.

The string spacing will be 18mm. I'm not a big fan of narrow string spacing, particularly for basses I occasionally slap. The 18mm spacing should be a good compromise for the extra string and neck width.

Nice one, I really like the wider spacing on a 6. Have you decided on a bridge yet?
