Is 'THAT' how you play it....?

Post by BassLine » 28 Sep 2018, 18:09

I learnt something new today - the exact way Louis Johnson played the bass line to Billy Jean.

Warning:- this might upset some of you technique purist. :eyebrow:

Like Herbie Flowers' bassline on Walk On The Wild Side, I tried octaves but it didn't sound right.
It's TWO basslines, one ascending on electric and a descending one on double bass (or maybe the other way around?)
Loud things: Markbass LittleMark 250, Hartke HA2500 amps, Hartke XL210 cabs
Pretty things: Fender MIA P, MIM P and J, SX J, Takamine ABG
Bands: Los Mescalitos , Distorted Tarts

An interview with Herbie playing both parts.

I would expect at least a little stank face for a bass line such as this.
Strings: Fender, Custom, Framus, Warwick
Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass
Cones: Baer
Patch: TC Electronic, Aguilar

Whole Lotta Love - doubling the E using octaves and the D using unisons.

Had tea with that there man and heard the story first hand. My one of two claim to fames, degree of separation things. The other one was being about 6' from the dozing Pope at the MCG.

Before you ask; Dad and Herbie were in the RAF band together and were mates. He played bass in Sky (80's prog rock band) and they toured here. Mum hooked up the two of them as a surprise for dad. Drinks afterwards ended up as tea at our place a few days later. I think that that bass in the video may well be the one he toured with, I have vague memories of a beat up blueish Fender. I tried chasing him down for dad a few years back but couldn't make contact. The last thing I found out was that he was directing a choir, but he didn't return messages through the one email I had into the choir so maybe he'd moved on to something else.

Ha, I've never heard a singer nail this one, and here we are picking on the bass line :)

:notworthy:

THE best name-drop on this here forum, ever :)

Herbie is a legend to me. His bassline in Space Odditty is an amazing trip up, down and across the whole fretboard, pure genius.
