What's up with the second-hand market?

Post by packrat » 24 Feb 2018, 13:27

It seems as if the secondhand market is getting a lot softer of later, with fewer items actually moving around. This is probably cyclical and depends on a bunch of trends including economic.

What are you seeing happening? What's do you think will happen over the next few years?

I used to think it was just on here because everyone was at capacity gear wise, but it seems to be everywhere.

Prices dropped when our AUD got parity with the US, they've recovered a bit, but not to where they should be confusing where our dollar is, and the increased effort to charge duty etc.

Perhaps Reverb is giving a great deal more access to secondhand over the last couple of years?

I reckon it's because as places like this spread knowledge, people make better gear choices and are therefore less likely to be buying of selling stuff.
* 2 Stingray 5's (one heavily modded), Ibanez SR805, Ashbory, + more...
* Carvin B1500, Epifani PS1000, Ashdown Superfly amps.
* Lots of DIY neo/lightweight cabs including one made from composites http://www.ozbassforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2546

Whatever is behind it the results for me are irresistibly priced good gear comes in, not much goes out, so I’m at bursting right now with some fantastic gear. Not a bad place to be!

Resisting the urge to make so many dad jokes about... losing it's shine, looking a little dated, feeling used, not quite what it used to be... Just as well I resisted right? :p

In seriousness, things go in cycles. A few years ago we were all falling overselves to buy new gear. It's as much about the cohort here as anything else I reckon.

The following reasons come to mind
  • Less people playing bass
  • more DJs out there
  • Static wages for several years now
  • Young people less inclined to learn instruments (?)
  • Less venues to play gigs
  • Hip Hop using electronic sound sources
Will play for food.

In which way do u mean?

Lack of sales or lack of quantity on offer?

I was readin something awhile ago about a guitar down turn/crisis. With a lack of younger players etc. Open for debate on the causes.

But too my surprise the other day i was bobbing around the local and it was packed which i was quiet surprised about.

Not that that yeilds an answer either way. I guess only the sales numbers would really tell the whole story

I meant that second hand prices seem to be declining.

There are just so many 'markets' now. FB, here, reverb, ebay, talkbass - it is endless. I really think that means that you can afford to wait, wait for price reductions, or the next firesale or crazy deal.
