Seriously - how many drive and distortion pedals does the world need.

Post by DeadlyErnest » 11 Dec 2017, 20:48

I'm trying to work out how many drive and distortion pedals there are. :) Reading the reviews and classified ads here has been a real eye opener. 8/

Do they all actually do that much different?

Insofar as there's a fairly large space of non-linear transfer functions, and further insofar as your ears as frequency-combs are pretty good at interpreting a quite wide range of those functions as timbre changes, yes.

To my ear, stuff like the ultra modern Darkglass distortion illustrates there are new directions to take this.

This is the full list. http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml The other list is just the list of compressors that are more or less identical.

A lot are derived from the same circuits so probably not no. I have had a very hard time finding a good more reliable replica of the Black Russian big muff v7 or v8 (can’t recall which) that really nailed drive for my tastes. So there’s that, we could do with at least one more!
