I really hate finger sounds on bass, that's why I'm exclusively a flatwound user nowadays, might give this TI flats a go in my P-bass when I got time to buy and fiddle with it :)

It amazes me when you her the isolated bass lines how bad some of them are but they sound so good in the mix.

Pearl Jam "Alive" is a perfect example
Isolated is not bad I guess it's just not anything like what you hear in the mix in my opinion. I always assumed it was a fretless with a bit of chorus nothing more

^ I felt embarrassed listening back a soloed fretless bass track I'd just recorded.... until the engineer played all the tracks. Slides everywhere, sloppy fingering, playing way behind the beat - but - he loved it and it sounded perfect in the mix.

That takes me back to my comment about David Ellefson - those bass tracks sound very ordinary soloed!

I think Chris Squire's bass in Roundabout sounds terrible when soloed but great in the mix.

there is definitely a theme here ... so , the question is why do we tone chase beyond our own pleasure.

clearly carving out our little part of the freq range has little to do with an actual pleasant tone.

I have to be honest and say that this is the main reason I play flats these days too.

I have graduated to the brightest flats I can find to at least retain some of the roundwound brightness I like in my sound.
Can't quite let go of my basses. They're kind of addictive.

I loved McCartney in Wings (eg. Coming Up). Which other bassists played a Ric with flats?

So what we need to know is what sounds good "out there" in a mix or in the audience. Soloed bass tracks are very useful like this but usually sound awful. The soloed James Jamerson and Bruce Thomas tracks for example have a terrible sound (I think) but in context they are fabulous.

When I was studying at Sydney CON we sat under Kees Boersma each week for section tutorials. Frankly, at the time I was initially underwhelmed. I mean the guy could play the snot out of the bass, but there was fingernoise, squeaks, rattles and the like. But like you say, reality in the mix is different. Listen to this...

There's a reason he's the principle of the SSO. Super subs + medieval svts on the highs

P.s. I think that Pearl Jam track with just the bass/drums is beyond awesome, but then again that album changed my life at the time and left me with an everlasting infatuation with fretless.

I must have listen to that song thousands of times and I never once thought "that fretless has a bit of OD", I don't think it's bad by any stretch it just sounds so very different to the album, almost to the point of being odd.

It's not OD in 'Alive'. IIRC, Jeff Ament's bass had a modulus neck with an epoxy board. It's 100% growl with a little chorus.
