What bass guitar sounds DON'T you like?

Post by OzzyGreg » 29 Jul 2013, 08:02

.
Sorry, a bit of a "nothing" thread i know, but I was just thinking.....

There are many, many bass sounds I like.

There's a few that I just can't get into (not trying to offend anyone here btw!) such as:
Gibson EB0
(Single pickup) Gibson EB2
Musicman Stingray

(I don't want to go into specifics why, that might cause people to be offended and defensive.)

Do you have any bass sounds that you don't particularly like?

Can't quite let go of my basses. They're kind of addictive.

Basses I've owned and could not get along with sound wise:-

Musicman Stingray.
Lakland 55-02.
Ibanez SR-400.
Spector Legend 6.

Basses I still own and very much get along with sound wise:-

Fender Ps
Fender Js
Lakland 55-01(passive) with single coils.

I see a common theme here.

I can't get along with the Gibson "Mudbucker" pickups. Too much boom and not enough definition. It might be down to a lack of experience with them, I've heard people make them sound good before but every time I play a bass that has them it sounds like utter shite to me.
That being said I LOVE those little humbuckers they put in the bridge of most of thier basses. So bitey and aggressive!

Edit: and I've absolutely hated the sound of every Ibanez SR I've ever played.

Metal (sorry Cam). I blame obnoxious guitar sounds that trample on bass.

"If you like detuning to C and playing power chords maybe you should've learned bass". That's why I'll never play metal.

End of rant.

Good tone depends more about the context in which it is being used than anything.

I love Jazz bass, but also love P bass. Stingray tone is great, but not exactly my thing to play... same goes for Rics.

I think when a bass becomes a bit too “farty” in the midrange it can start irritating me (in the 600-800Hz range). But that’s not necessarily the fault of the bass, rather than that of the user.

My favourite tone is an active Jazz bass with stainless steel rounds on it, with a nice sheen on the top (lives above 10kHz) without having that “glassy” tone (lives in 3kHz land). Articulate, yet thumpy.

I guess what I REALLY don’t like is MUD. There are some GREAT sounds in the low-mids, but get that wrong and that creamy richness turns to “bleh”.

There are two sounds that really get on my nerves.
1. Honky nasal sound;
Came during the 90s when everyone had a 4x10 and their bass set on the bridge pickup with mids dialed to the max on their amp. It was something to do with punk and Primus, but I never heard Les sound like that. Similar to this is Jaco's tone on a lot of recordings. Just plain awful. Again, love Jaco's note choice, hate that nasal tone.
2. Billy Sheehan's tone;
So good as a player, such muddy tone. Can't do it. I know what he's trying to do, but I don't think it works. Can't hear what he's doing properly. Curiously, this is another mudbucker sound. I don't mind mudbuckers actually, Jack Bruce made them work, but not Mr Sheehan. But heck, who the hell am I to say so. He's a god in japan.

I was going to mention Jaco's and Billy Sheehan's tone

Jack Bruce's tone is that is one of those great "low-mids focused" tones that I was talking about.

And Daniel, I agree with you about Stanley's School Days tone... it really lacks any cajones... it's clean and all, but ICK!

Bass tones I LOVE/Don't Love

Jazz
Love
1) Anything by Jimmy Haslip.
2) Anything by Gary Willis
Don't Love
3) Most of Jaco
4) Most of Pattitucci's Chick Corea Elektric Band's tone.

Rock
Love
1) Anything by John Deacon with Queen
Don't Love
2) Most of Chris Squire's tone with Yes in the "Roundabout" era ... it got better in the 80's IMO.

Mind you... I think a LOT of recorded bass tone has AS MUCH to do with how the album is produced and mixed as anything else.
