love the timber! The shape reminds me a little of a thicker version of a P-bass Lyte. I really like it a lot! Good job!
Thanks, Kerry. Wasn't aware of the P Lyte (had to look it up), and you're not wrong. Thicker though? My build is 37 mm which in old school terms translates to 1.46" ;) .

Anyway, thought I'd put this here, more necks. Spent a lot of time in the workshop machining and routing - had to be done, of course, but "boring".

On the left three blanks with lots of grooves for truss rod and carbon rods. The carbon rods are already glued in (pic was taken before that), and all that's left to do is make the truss rod channel a little deeper and wider at the headstock end. You'll see that I'm doing 4 carbon rods for the neck-through (in this case it's #018 with the purple heart top) just because I can and to see if there's any difference.
On the right are the raw bits for the #014 replacement neck (remember, ended up not square but I was able to salvage that for a standard neck) and for the #020 Manta (5-piece). They are glued up already as well, and looking good.

Michael

Apart from the BFH (see #020) I managed to fit the neck into the pocket which means I can finally decide on where to put the inserts, drill the holes and put them in.

Close-up:

Reasonably tight. And straight.

And this is with the fretboard (it's the back, the front has masking tape with fret positions):

It'll be a nice bass ... .

Michael

Love purple heart !

I love it even more as it starts to tone down with age ... some people don’t , but I think it looks richer with time

Man, this is going to look soooo nice when properly put together:

Compared to all the other builds this feels pretty tiny ... .

Also starting to look like a bass but the skinny neck (remember it's a 4 string) is totally freaking me out.

Of course everything is still angular so it looks a little weird but that'll change fairly quickly. Started shaping the neck and gee, I REALLY love those Shinto rasps. Effortless and quick, and they leave such a nice surface.

Michael

4? That’s not a number for strings, that’s a number for pickups!

Does your Shinto rasp leave two groove lines on the wood from the outside edges of the rasp?

Hi Paul,

If I go totally straight then yes but I'm a "sideways kinda guy" so any rasp I use is always at a slight to medium angle going across the work piece - no issues then.

Purple heart is a tough timber to work with - takes ages to sand. Good thing though is that it has a built-in indicator that tells you exactly WHERE you've sanded.

Hand-sanded the 20" radius today. Early stages:

You can see the little purple patch in the centre of the board - the radius block hasn't touched that one yet.

Same section after completion of sanding:

It'll take a few days to get back to purple.

Whole neck:

Some nice grain in that one, should be very interesting when finished.

Michael
