Those templates came in handy today - not a lot of fun working outside in 35 plus but hey, can't complain too much, it's Melbourne after all.

Pickups fit perfectly:

Now where's my bandsaw? ;) :D . Will have to wait until next week, plenty of other stuff to do.

Michael

Same process as with #014, the fretted sibling.

Started radius-sanding the board as well, not something I can do in just one sitting ... .

Been a while since I last posted here. Both builds for Matt are in the slow lane at the moment while waiting for the 2-piece bridges from ETS. Still, some progress here. Doesn't look like much but there's about 3-4 hours worth of neck and neck-to-body shaping here. Almost happy now, still some fine tuning to do. Also needs more attention in the tummy cut region but other than that almost there.

Still waiting for hardware and electronics. Spent some quality time with this one today.

Re-shaped the neck-body transition, really wan't quite up to what I had in mind. Much better now - further into the body to make access to the higher register as easy as possible:

It's almost there, just develops as I move along until it feels right.

Also dug into the tummy cut which was a little lukewarm - much better now but doesn't really show in a pic I took so no pic.

And I did some fretboard radius sing AND levelling at the same time using the "run-out special price" 18 aluminium sanding block from StewMac as shown here with another bass:

Looking good:

Of course this is only 80 grit so it'll go all glassy as I move up with the grit.

As mentioned in the #022 thread the more you progress in the build the less you have to show for the time spent.

Michael

Slowly slowly. Lots of sanding today (that's why it looks like I've done nothing). Damp cloth to remove the dust, bring out the grain and raise it too so that the next sanding session is super-efficient. And of course a gratuitous Luminlay shot.

Slowly moving along. Here's the back cover - outside not sanded or treated with anything yet:

Inside treated with superglue to re-enforce:

Kind of a preview of what the amboyna burl will look like when finished. Love it.

Almost there. The amboyna looks stunning after 320 grit sanding - amazing how much more detail that brings out. The walnut and the wenge are still resisting a little, a little more saying required there but other than that (and of course the fingerboard - only at 80 grit at the moment) that's the woodworks pretty much done for this one.

Finishing time has come. I've put the first coat of Osmo on but can't show you pics just yet - hanging on the hook in the dark. However, I'm processing the backplates at the same time so here's the preview:

Top left is the fretted neck-through (#014) - a little overexposed in this shot, there's a fair bit happening as well.

Now let it cure, let it cure, let it cure ... .

OK, first Osmo application down. Still smells a little so will need overnight to fully set (as mentioned elsewhere I normally give it 24 hours).

Love it. The board hasn't seen anything yet, will probably just oil it. If anything one could say it's a little "beige". I think it's understated beauty - but that's just me.

This one will be in Sydney next weekend - might put electronics in but still waiting for the bridge so not playable either ... .

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: "I'd love to do a lot more sanding today" said no-one ever. #014 (the fretted sibling of this one) is now almost there but I couldn't hack it anymore. Worked on the bocote fretless (the sibling of Merlnin "Prince") instead and almost finished carving the neck as well as getting the tummy cut done.

I know - feels nice too. Always good to see and feel that all that sanding (did I mention how much fun that is yet?) is totally worth it in the end. This one will be hard to let go - just kidding, it'll go to someone who can actually Mae it sound as good as it looks.

Michael
