bone blank to replace an old one

Post by billybass » 27 Jul 2018, 10:53

Hi All to you Ozbass craftsmen,

I have a Washburn AB20 Acoustic Bass and I want to make a new insert for the bridge, but I don't know where to get a blank big enough to make it from.
It will need to be 3 inches long, 3/16 inch deep and 3/8 inch high.
I have made bone nuts before, but this bass needs a bone insert to make it sound consistent because the one that came from the factory is 2 pieces glued together and I'm not even sure what it is made out of.
Please help.

Cheers BillyBass

Have a look on Australian Luthier Supplies they might have what you’re after. I’m using TUSC nuts for my builds. They don’t stink as much when you’re working them and are very good.

I think you'll have to search around a bit to find a blank that is that fat and that long.

I'd either glue two nut blanks end to end, or two saddle blanks side by side. If done well, the glue seam won't be visible. You could even use epoxy and mix a bit of white pigment in...

Back at home and seeing the latest response so I looked at Luthier Supplies again and they them in listed as extra wide in unbleached bone 6mm x 10mm x 85mm but out of stock so you'll have to give them a call but yes you can get them if they can. Gluing two together isn't a bad idea though.

I think maybe gluing two might work. What kind of glue? I've never glued Bone before.

thank you all for your advice
I ended up using 2 bone nut blanks side by side and the fit was so good I did not even have to glue it together,
now I'm levelling the fingerboard with a radius block and then will string her up to have a test run
