Compulsive timber acquisition syndrome

Post by Classic5 » 27 May 2018, 20:05

So what does this all mean? Some strange force has just drawn me to these two items. My justification for the purchase was that yeah, one day I do want to build another bass. These items are all so unique so if you see something you’re drawn to…….buy it now  (that was the logic anyway)

I may need to see a psychologist if this continues as I already have two other pieces in the garage :eyebrow:

You Melbournites are so lucky having David Searle to help you turn beautiful pieces of timber like this into working instruments. I see no need for a psychologist Ivan. You are asking in the wrong place for that.

Is that bocote I see?

Ivan, nothing to worry about. You ordered two tops, I've ordered 15 in the last year (with 5 currently on their long journey from Canada).

And you are totally right: when you look and see something you HAVE to buy it straight away, otherwise someone else will.

Welcome to the club!! ;) :poke:

Yes, 2nd one is Bocote. I missed the last batch but just happened to spot this one by chance today. It'll make a stunning top as will the two that you purchased earlier. And OMG......you've bought how many?????

Seems like it's well too late for that. :rolleyes

Better have your family join the local support group. :help

Go away, Davin,

I really don't need to see all this. When Ivan first posted I couldn't help myself and ended up looking on my favourite supplier's site - what a mistake. It took a lot of willpower NOT to order another few (maybe 5 - 10?) tops. I think there is a room for a "Timber Addict Anonymous" group (as enabling as that might be).

Semi-hollow body? Can't wait to see that emerge from the pile of timber. How's your bass going? Playing it exclusively?

Michael

I'm using it whenever I get the excuse and it has become my main player.

Only time I'm using my warwick is for recording for a friends melodic hardcore project - 2 reasons for going back to this bass - a) I'd already recorded a couple of tracks on it & b) the stuff is in a dropped tuning that I'd prefer to just save that bass for - some of the shapes and runs are just easier in the dropped tuning than on the 5 string.

Other than that, its my main bass for home use and gigs. I'll start up a thread for my guitar build once i get started. Still need to order a bunch of materials before i really get into it.

Its the same as the centre piece in the middle picture, but I put some oil on it to see how it might look finished. Surprisingly, it's spotted gum I found on a rack at Bunnings. Looked like stuff people didn't want for decking and they were going to throw out. Pretty sure I'm going to use it for the top of the guitar.

Gee, I better pay more attention at the timber racks when I'm next at Bunnings. Very nice.

When you go to Mathews Timber and don't balk at buying 2.4m lengths of timber you know you have a problem.

Nice selections there guys too.

Yeah, Mathews have a really good hardwood range. Might have to pay them a visit soon.....It's been a while.
