Ivan the bass is looking incredible. Like the outline for the pickguard, it really suits the body. Looking forward to its completion. Hopefully before I split!

Thought I'd post a mini update.

Yes I now understand the therapeutic benefits of sanding, sanding and sanding. I feel strangely calm.

Working on the outside edges of the body:

And as the sun sets it's starting to look quite nice indeed:

Hopefully heading into the workshop at MSGM tomorrow to keep the momentum going :yep

Thanks Nick. The credit definitely goes to Dave and Rob who have an uncanny ability to pull you up before you head off in the wrong direction. So far I'm really pleased with how things are going. I better start practicing so I have something to play when it's done.

One thing I’ve learn is this is more patience and attention to details than any great wood working mastery.

Knowing you as I do this build is going to be exceptional

David has applied the first sealer coat and we're ready for some black dye to do the grain enhancing thing......bit nervous about the next step. I may have a go at it tomorrow. Fingers crossed I don't make a total mess of it.

I'll do my best Pete.......but lately I've been spending more time building than playing, so it will be interesting. As we all know bass is a very unforgiving instrument :eyebrow:

I'll definitely have demo with something nice and simple :yep

I’m actually not playing at the moment had to quit my band and playing for the moment. Unfortunately I’m struggling with building as well but I’m more annyoyed about the issue affecting my building more than my playing. It is addictive

Applied some tint yesterday and sanded it back to enhance the grain (had a minor disaster applying tint over the nitro sealer so had to sand it all back start again). Pretty happy with the result this time :yep

After applying tint and before sanding:

Already said it looks great, Ivan, really nice. This will be even more “contrasty” once the nitro goes on.

Which tint are you using? I’ve gone back to the drawing board and am comparing three black options : Timbermate (which results in a level surface - it is a grainfiller after all), the black Osmo and a spirt-based stain (I think the one you’re using, Watson and Feast or something like that) which will result in a relief/3D-style finish.

Merry Xmas, Happy Festivus.

Michael

On this occassion I applied a coat of Feast & Watson sanding sealer with a brush, let it sit overnight and then used a cloth to apply a thin coat of Feast & Watson Prooftint (Japan Black). Rubbing the tint in with the grain. I let the tint sit for about one and a half hours and then sanded it back with 180, then 240.
