First go at the inlay ended up a bit messy, so off to the workshop yesterday for a rescue attempt.

Did some more drilling around the letters after David cut around the outline with a craft knife.

Here's some drilling in action with background music provided courtesy of David testing some pickups:

Ended up with a black blob again - a mix of epoxy and ebony dust:

Started Sanding back today and you can just see the letters coming through:

And yeah.....pretty happy with the result now. The lines are nice and clean, ready for a top coat and some burst :yep

what I've learnt thoughout this process........well, there's definitely a lot of stuffing around with inlay work. But it's something I really enjoy and would like to improve on in future.

Nicely done, Ivan,

And way above anything I'd ever attempt ... .

Thanks guys. And Michael......I'm liking the idea of your luminlay dot formation in place of a traditional headstock inlay more and more :yep

Ha - I'm just doing that because I don't have the patience or skills for inlays. Mind you, it still takes about an hour to do it on the headstock, and longer when I do it on the trussrod cover (my preferred option).
Of course it's not restricted to Luminlay, you can use any material ... . It just makes sense considering it represents a star constellation.

Ditto on that. I avoid inlay like the plague. Hence my branding iron. :D

I love your idea of using a branding iron to burn in the logo

Ok.....so I spent a few hours in the workshop at MSGM this morning, working on the headstock finish.

Thanks to David and Rob, this thing is looking stunning, and is far exceeding my expectations from a first build. VERY happy so far :)

That burst came up really nice. Not really my thing but I appreciate it when it’s done well.

I'm usually not one for burst headstocks either Pete, but in this case it'll look just right. :yep

All class. Inspired by F Bass? And looks just as good too.

Hey Nick, yes the shape is definitely F bass inspired. I was originally going to do a standard passive jazz bass but then decided to go down another path. This bass is going to have a number of features that I've always wanted in one bass but never managed to find.

The pickups will be Delano and the preamp will be 3 band Glockenklang....active/passive.

Works for me.

And good choice of electronics (although I have to say that the combination Delano pu and Nordstrand pre works better for me - the Glockenklang in the 5 string Kermit is great, don’t get me wrong, but doesn’t seem to be quite as “authoritative”).
