Attach the wings with vehicle trim clips you've got lying around from your old VW.

OK, I'll bite.

One piece - no neck pocket required. Of course that's been done before.

Other than that I'm thinking threaded inserts (there are many variations so the actual final product may look different) at the end of the neck, and a small cavity rout at the bottom of the body to access the bolts. Plenty of stability with 4 to those I would think ... .

Michael

Trim clips and gaff tape eh? :lol:

Michael, you're sort of on the right track but I've thought through that. There are potential issues there I want to avoid. But good thinking. :hmm

Ok, so I've teased you all a bit. Let me tell you a bit more of my thinking. I've been thinking hard about trying to make my designs as simple and minimalist as possible. Not just simple in terms of parts, but also in terms of processes. I've been asking myself this question...

How many simple elements really make up a guitar?

How many simple processes really produce a guitar?

Interesting because Leo Fender/George Fullerton and Les Paul also worked their way through this ideas too. In the end I decided an electric guitar is made up of "Three Planks" (that's my trademark, like I'll ever had time to develop it, haha). 1 Neck and 2 body wings. No great surprises there, but how you put it all together is the trick I guess. :hmm

I'll build a few crude prototypes with scrap before I go much further with a proper design. I've got 2 guitar necks I can use/abuse for such exercises, so I'll starting hacking them together and we'll go from there. ;)

Not sure about all this, Pete. Minimum elements? Here's my list:
1) pickup;
2) output jack;
3) depending on the number of strings 4 (or 5, or 6, or 2) pins (could be screws or nails) you can put the ball ends of your strings on;
4) a short length of material for approximate intonation;
5) a nut (frets are obviously optional);
6) tuners;
7) one plank that's just wide enough to house your pickup and then tapers into the neck (both width and thickness);
8) possibly a truss rod.

No "connecting wings". And design? With all due respect I don't think you care too much about conventional design goals :poke: ;) .

There you go. Easy. Not for me (I like a "little" bit more but YMMV).

Happy to hear your thoughts.

Regards,
Michael

Edit: I pretty much described a Chapman stick, didn't I?

There you go, Pete (well, both of you ;) ), one picture instead of 1,000 words ... .

Yeah considering essentials, I can't see how wings matter - the thing doesn't fly after all :lol:

... but maybe we're all still thinking too conventionally :hmm

:lol: I fully loved that movie. Especially when they went to the Rush concert. :rolf:

Been messing around in the shed for a few minutes today to see if some of my ideas were on track. Hmmm... unforeseen issues. I need to go and scab some more scrap before I can make more progress. :hmm

Hope I'm not the only one but someone has to ask the dumb questions. I can't picture the design, have you got this drawn?

I can only picture the air guitar now... :D It would be awfully light and well balanced :rolf:
