He's just stealing all my thunder, is all ;) .

Pete has so many good things to show that he doesn't need my thread.

And Kerry, sorry, I don't have much to show at the moment, haven't been able to do anything during the week (not even sanding) - bit miffed about it but, you know, life happens. Hoping for plenty of pics in Feb though :) .

Michael

Short but productive session today.

Cut both fretboards to size and used the amazing slotting jig to put fret slots in - 30 minutes, really.
Glued one fretboard on the neck of the Q (Build 04, you know, the "P" but one step further ;) ) - curing as I write this, will be good to go to start with final shaping next week.

I have some pics of the Manta build.

Walnut contrast layer glued down - looking good:

Sideview:
Image
4 mm of nuttiness.

Finished the transition from neck to headstock:
Image

And with the end of the fretboard:
Image
You can see the slot for the zero fret and the area where the string spacer will be. That's going to work out nicely, the sliver of walnut with the amazing quilt/burl maple will be quite nice.

Other end of the neck:
Image
The hashed-out area will be hidden beneath the quilted/burl maple top.

I'll be routing a 70mm wide slot into the body blank without the top and fit the neck (which of course will have to be thinned back a little. The neck will slot into the space between body and top layer:

Image
and the end result will be something like this:
Image

That means I have a long contact area of neck and body which will enable me to use 6 or 8 (or more) threaded inserts and bolts for a nice and tight connection - button top you get all the visual appeal of the quilt/burl maple.

It's somethingI want to keep for my "Mantra" and "Kermit"-type builds.

Comments and questions as usual encouraged and welcome.

Regards,
Michael

Gosh, it's been a while. Busy at work, and the transition to part-time took a little longer than expected. Anyway, some progress and a couple of lucky escapes for this "Manta" build.

Here's the neck pocket rout filled with the extended neck. Using different inserts this time, very easy to apply (provided you put them in at the appropriate time):
Image

The it was time to glue the top on. Snag: I didn't apply one of the clamps properly which means there wasn't enough pressure to hold the maple top down. This resulted in a visible gap between the walnut and the maple:
Image

The worst possible implication was the removal (destructive) of the beautiful top, and use of a new one. I REALLY didn't want that, not because of the money but because of the looks. The easiest way to find out if it was useable or not was to start with the forearm cut, and I think I got lucky - first Houdini for the day:
Image

The actual forearm cut will go a lot deeper but it already looks fine - phew.

With that out of the way I did the electronics rout. I measured the body thickness numerous times (as I was sanding it back), and was OK with what I saw - 42 mm, a little on the thick side for me but that's what I expected it to be. OK, set the router depth to 38, and let's go.
Deeper and deeper, hit the walnut layer and checked how much further I had to go and lo and behold, the router still had 6 mm to go. Re-measured the body thickness and looked at the Vernier properly: 37 mm. Guess what: I looked at the wrong spot the first 7 or 8 times I measured. Well, Houdini 2 for the day - thankfully I had the walnut layer in there. Anyway, the upshot is that 37 mm body thickness is much more the way I like it. The hole for the electronics:
Image

Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky (and really didn't deserve to be) on the front. We normally use a couple of screws to stop the laminate layers from moving when glueing. Interestingly enough I completely messed up one of them, not that I didn't have enough area to play with. Anyway, can be fixed, or maybe I should turn it into a feature (not sure what that would be):
Image

Two more. This is the current overall appearance. As you can see the intention was to have plenty of neck-body contact (achieved) without losing all that visual appeal of the top (achieved).
Image

And here's where the neck-body transition will happen. Note the 6 mm worth of walnut, should make for some nice visual:
Image

Fretboard glued on as well, will require some trickery at the body end (never mind). Can't be bothered to round over with a router, doesn't make a big difference, I'll just go in by hand straight away. Love a bit of rasping and filing ;) .

Finishing option at the moment is brilliant red (including the fretboard), or maybe a reverse burst going from dark red at the centre to orange at the edge. We'll see.

Michael

Early stages of body shaping and finishing:

All done with rasp and file so far. Both hard work and "therapeutic" ... ;)

Not a lot in terms of visual progress but it'll be most helpful in the next week or two.

Finally roughly cut the headstock, and linnished back the width to the fretboard edge as well as the thickness to about 20 mm (fretboard edge to back of neck so about 21 mm) at fret 1 and 22 at fret 12. The pic doesn't really show all that but I'm now ready to shape this one as well.

Image

Didn't have time to do any more with the body but there's only about 30 minutes or so left to do anyway ;) .

That is all.

Michael

Not quite sure how many hours of additional rasping, filling and sanding have passed (it wasn't just 30 minutes, I'm sure of that) but I'm finally happy with the body.

Sanded to 400 (4 times, with two damp cloth treatments to get the grain to stand up) and wiped down with methanol to show off the grain:

Also did some more work on the neck which still had a few ridges but that's all sorted (I think). Will still have to install the Luminlay markers so no picks, and probably another week before it's ready for a few coats of silky stuff.

Michael
