Hi Steve,

The tops are between 6 and 8 mm (spalted is thicker). Will reply to your pm tomorrow.

Some time in the workshop. Not a lot to show for it but all prep work, really. Lots of sawing, thicknessing and sanding.

Here's the contrast layer, made of walnut. I had to bandsaw about 200 mm of walnut standing on edge (not my most enjoyable activity ever), then David and I thicknessed them down and final thickness sanding resulted in 4 mm - perfect.

Image

Would make a nice top in its own right. Oh well.

Here's the sandwich: silky oak core with white ash "wings", walnut in the middle and the burl maple on top:

Looking forward to seeing it all assembled.

And a couple of maple fretboards came out of more "on edge" bandsawing, thicknessing and sanding:

Michael

That walnut is absolutely beautiful. You're right, it would make a great top : 8|

Where is the like button when you need it!?? Top work buddy! Pre ogress is looking absolutely great! What are you going to use to finish these builds? Ie, a Waterbased or oil based polyurethane, nitro, Tung oil (real Tung oil, not the varnish), a varnish type product etc? can't wait to see that quilted top pop! It's going to look unreal absolutely! Keep up the great work buddy :thumbup:
Great deals with Steve77 & B_jamin! Top blokes :thumbup:

Plenty more left, Ivan, so I might put some aside for a more restrained "classy" look (instead of all those weird and flashy stuff I'm in the process of using). And now that I've actually gone through the process it should be pretty straightforward.

Michael

Hi Steve,

The "P" (Build 04) will be satin black - that's it. I thought a trans finish would be nice but the alder grain isn't particularly nice so solid it will be. No pick guard (most likely anyway).
The "Manta" (like I said, can't really call it "Sting") will be a trans orange-red (or red-orange) burst in nitro - David sprays these for me so all I need to do is pick the colour and he does his magic. Not sure if I go satin or gloss (the latter is a massive PITA to do so maybe not).
The crazy spalted top is likely to end up in another "Kermit" - I'm currently holding it for a possible custom build (which kind of addresses your PM - I'll reply to that as well though). I'll have to use epoxy to stabilise that (very brittle and full of little holes) and may mix luminescent powder into the epoxy to get a "random glow" bass. but that's a little further down the track.

Regards,
Michael

Amazing how much force you can apply with those straps :) .

And you did, Drew, you did ;) .

Busy at the workshop today, Drew, Blaine, Ivan and from Canberra: Pete, and a couple of new faces (at least to me): Dan and Chris.

Got a fair bit done but didn't take any pics. So here's a quick description:
Build 04 (how about we call it Model Q? I mean it's an evolution of a "P", right?).
- sanded the headstock level;
- "machined" the fretboard blank to a 20" radius.
That's it. Over the week I'll drill the holes for the electronics (passive, with vol and tone AND a three-way mini switch to have neck - both in series - bridge), drill the holes for the (traditional) neck screws (I'll have to use a metal plate, very little material thanks to the body being only 30 mm thick. Then "sand, sand, sand" and hopefully it'll be done before Saturday so it can be turned into a "satin black" beast :) .

Build 06, a.k.a. "Manta"
- body thicknessed to just over 30 mm (thank you, Rob);
- sawed both walnut contrast layer and quilted maple top sheets to body shape;
- thicknessed off cuts to about 1 mm (walnut) and 2.5mm (maple) for "decorative headstock";
- sawed and linnished body to shape;
- glued down walnut contrast layer (curing as we speak);
- "machined" the fretboard blank to a 20" radius.

Cleaned up my mess :) .

At home I glued the 1 mm walnut and 2.5 mm maple sheets on the headstock - again curing as I'm writing this.

Very happy with the progress - of course an "end of January" completion is out of the question but the "Q" should be done within then next 3 - 4 weeks (or maybe "30 minutes"? ;) ).

Comments/questions welcome, as usual.

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: to the day two years since I first started building.

That tele looks fantastic. What are the holes near the bridge pickup for out of interest? Using a smaller bridge to show more of that wood off?
