I like his idea about 'making a hole without making a hole.'
That's the whole (no pun intended) idea I've been pursuing for the last few instruments.

Where does one buy 0.5mm nails to pin the fretboard?

Dang, I've never used anything that small. I've used 2 or 2.5mm nails to pin it before I trimmed the edges

Hi Paul,

I'm using the thinnest nails (they're really like little pins, probably 1 mm or so) I can get at Bunnings and, like Pete, use them outside the actual fretboard area - once the board's on I trim the completed neck to its final shape.

Ahhhh ... I see.
Of course, trimming the neck down after the fretboard is attached makes more sense. Hindsight!

After Owens invite to the upcoming GTG I've had to pull my socks up and start back on the builds. (I've been making bamboo flutes recently and the bass builds have lied dormant). Nothing like a deadline to make progress.
Fretboard is now glued and started on the neck pocket. 16mm deep? I'll have to get a new router bit from Bunnings.
And I've realised I've made the neck too thick. I had made the neck (without the fretboard) 23mm. I think I'll need to bring that down to 19-20mm. The fretboard is just over 6mm.
I can run it through the thicknesser face down tomorrow.

Neck (minus fretboard) now thicknessed down to 19mm and the neck pocket routed and chiseled square. A little tap with the mallet and it fits like a glove. Next up is the control cavity and pickup route.

Hi Paul,

Nice work! Are you going to leave it natural? You'd have to, right?

The neck seems to sit pretty deep in the pocket with just the board above the level of the body. I normally have about 10 mm clearance from the top of the board to the body.
You may run into issues with the string height adjustment at the bridge (might mean you have to sink the bridge). Alternatively you could add a 3-4 mm thick layer of maple or similar to the bottom of the heel.

Looking forward to see how this one's coming along.

Regards,
Michael

It'll either be clear or transparent blue or red. I'll do some test on the offcuts.

I went 0.5mm too deep on the pocket. There is approx 8mm clearance to the top of the fretboard. I'm working off the dimensions of my first build which has a 7mm clearance and works well with the single bridges I have, which are quite low. Good to know there are other options. I've noticed the spalted maple is quite soft compared to the other wood. I'll have to take it easy with the rasps in those areas and I'm planning on using threaded inserts to bolt on the neck for added strength.

Pickup cavity routed in the MM sweet spot. Approx 90% of the scale. 799 mm from the nut, or 90 mm from the 35" point.
And some rough rasping to add some contour.

Looking good! How’s the weight now it’s approaching final shape?

The body is approx 1.5kg

Progress update:
Frets installed. Had to glue one down as I hammered it in on an angle and redirected the slot. So I had to widen the slot, and re-fret it with some glue.
Control cavity routed and a transparent 3mm perspex cover shaped to fit.
Lots and lots of filing and sanding! And some more sanding! And more to come.
Mental note: Don't work with spalted maple laminated with other wood again. It's too soft and files/sands inconsistently with the other wood. I'm looking forward to just work with swamp ash and mahogany on my next body.

Looks great, Paul. And I was expecting the spalted maple comment at some stage :poke: ;) .

I wonder if I'll need a stronger harder finish other than Osmo?
