FS/T: Mesa Bass Prodigy 4:88 $2,500

Post by kodou » 06 Aug 2018, 17:09

I've had a moment of revelation in that my Orange AD200 really is the only amp I play.

So I've put the Reeves into Found Sound but the Mesa has been a bit of a should I or shouldn't I?

I mean it is a totally awesome amp and the smallest, lightest all tube KT88 driven amp I've ever seen.

However I thought I'd see what the appetite for it would be.

Money wise I'd be looking at $2,500. Trade wise, something awesome. Could be a Sandberg bass, could be a part trade for a Mesa 6x10... We'll see.

The amp is in perfect condition and still has 4 years of the transferable Mesa Warranty.

Comes with the Mesa Carry Bag which is also in great condition.

At this point I'm still not 100% on the idea but am leaning more on the 'sell it' than 'keep it' side.

How does that amp hold up power wise to the Orange? I have an Ampeg SVT VR but have been thinking of getting a lighter weight amp. Was thinking of getting an Ampeg V4B but worried the 100 watts might not be enough. Have you played this in a loud band setting something like post rock metal? Thanks.

Well the Orange puts out about 160w whereas the Mesa puts out a solid 225w.

I’ve had this live and in a rehearsal space up against a 100w Engl and a very loud drummer and it holds it’s own at just over 9o’clock on the master and 12o’clock on the gain. This is through a 4x10.

I’ve had no issue with getting my required volume and headroom out of it.

Me liking the Orange over the Mesa is just a subjective matter. Tone shaping, power, and portability wise the Mesa wins.

As tempting as that offer is, I am currently selling a Reeves Custom 225 so not sure if another heavy tube amp is what I am after right now :D

That being said, the VR is a kick arse amp so I'll think about it.

Bump. Price drop to $2,500 or trade for a Sandberg VM4 and cash my way.
