FS: Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt Flatwound Strings

Post by JimP » 14 Jul 2018, 15:47

2812 Long Scale 4-String 50-105
Basically brand new, just out of the packet this week to try something different, but turns out I prefer my Chromes
A couple of cm trimmed off the E and A strings, nothing drastic, still plenty of length
Cost me just over $70 landed from Bassstringsonline
Sell for $55 posted

I have a pack waiting to go on otherwise I’d be in. How do you compare them with chromes if you don’t mind going off topic?

Much brighter out of the packet, though I've had my chromes on a few years so maybe I'm used to their broken in tone now. Chromes have a bigger fundamental 'thump' which I love but I thought I wanted something a bit brighter. The EBs seem too bright for my taste, though admittedly I'm being too impatient to break them in properly.

The best way to describe the Cobalts is a step closer to the brighter tone of roundwound strings but with the smoother feel of flats. I'd say a less mellow and more 'modern' sound than is traditionally associated with flats. They have a strong signal & sustain, more upper mids growl and a bit more flex (hence 'slinky') than regular flats. Halfway between rounds and flats.
