NPD - Empress Effects Para EQ

Picked up this EQ in a partial trade and cash deal with JimP.

Before this, the best tone saver I had was the MXR M81 Bass Preamp.
I bought it to have more control over my mids on festival stages where the supplied backline is weak or has a baked in smiley face EQ etc... yuck...

The Para EQ is Ah - May - Zing!
So much more control! No D.I but the tones I can get out of this thing are so damn sweet. I like fat low mids and less deep lows so with the Q selector I can boost a thin range of lows, a wide range of mids and a medium amount of highs...

AND then boost the shite out of it for solos (cos yeah - I do so many - deeply sarcastic tone here)

Insert happy dance here..

This and the Solid Gold FX Super Beta are permanent :-)

Yeah it's nice when something actually lives up to expectations.
The amount of $ I've wasted on finding out what doesn't work for me could fund a revolution...

Also Jase, what do you think of the Super Beta? How do you find it? What would you compare it to in terms of other drive pedals out there? Have seen a couple of bassists talking about them so am a little curious

Well! I've used a LOT of overdrives and so far this has been my favorite. I've found that almost all of the overdrives I've used have coloured the tone in ways ranging from subtle to all out Jekyll and Hyde which has always irked me. I know the rest of the band cant tell the differewnce but I sure can.

To me this drive is completely transparent. All it does is take my tone and add balls he he. I rarely have it "always on" but it can simulate a nice fat tube sound but depending on the band i mostly use it to boost certain parts of songs with everything ranging from fat to all out metal overdrive which is why I dont like the drives that change the tone too much.

To compare it migt be a bit hard but I think the Xotic Bass BB Pre was the closest to this... The Beta just feels juicy and wet by comparison - really nice fat drive

Interesting - from your rough description it almost sounds like a gutsier version of a Fairfield Barbershop, or maybe like parts of a Darkglass VMT. Still, sounds like something I might well be interested in, if I can find the board space. Cheers!

Personally I HATED the Darkglass B3K but I hear the VMT is a lot different...

Yeah, it is - I'm still not the biggest fan of the B3K (prefer the B7K, more usable) but the VMT is one of my favourites
