To be honest, if it is advertised as a hot pickup, and it's weak as piss, that is grounds for refund, regardless of it being the same across the batch that BC got. That's not a criticism of BC, it's the reality of the product Fender have provided in this case.
That’s the thing. Fender advertise it as being a custom wound Seymour Duncan pickup. Fender doesn’t claim it is a “hot” output pickup, it’s user reviews on Talkbass and Sweetwater etc, that claim it is hot.

I’m certain that the average production varience tolerances would legally allow for the volume/output i am experiencing.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice bass. The tone isn’t thin, it’s just not punchy and “hot” as i had expected. Expectation management is a very subjective and inexact science lol
Yeah I hear you. Expectation management - that is a great term, and I think all of us have struggled with it at some point.

I can't see the pics either, but can someone clarify for me - is this supposed to be a relic job? Just curious about the mentions of the finish cracks and bits falling off - if it's not supposed to be a relic then surely that's grounds enough for a refund?

Sad to hear the bass isn’t what you expected. Where to from here then?
To be honest, i dont know.

If I can help with using shop time at MSGM just let me know. There is even a guy there who does custom pickup winding.

And yes the Photobucket links are not working. Imgur is your best friend Andy.

If you'd played it in a store first, would you have bought it?

BC should be able to sell it quickly if returned. Phone up and ask.

Otherwise do you have anyone local that can look at the setup? I'd try a 1/4 turn tightening of the truss rod to see if that extra tension helps the bass 'speak' better. That has occasionally helped when I've set up some basses.

It is a relic job as you now know, but the back of the head pic with significant cracking of the finish is pretty extreme. It literally looks like scales off a Snapper.

I phoned The Bass Centre today concerned there might be issues with my example, but I didn’t ask for a refund. I read The Bass Centre’s Refund Policy today, and they are under no obligation to offer me a refund.
The Australian Consumer Law provides that a product must be of acceptable quality having regard to its price, description and purpose.

If I had played it in a store I wouldn’t have purchased it at all. I’ve been lucky so far. I first started buying and selling guitars and basses online in 2002. In 16yrs, this is the only one I regret.

I think you will find that regardless of the Bass Centre's stated policy, you ARE ALWAYS entitled to a refund if the product does not perform as advertised or to your satisfaction, for the reasonable life of said product.
If you buy a fridge, with their 2 year warranty, and it fails after 4 years, you are entitled to a refund as the reasonable life expectancy of a fridge is 10 years or more.
A good friend of mine was Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs that's how I know I am right.
I'm sure the Bass Centre will refund your money.

Yes. The ACL provides that products must be of acceptable quality. At the very least, flaking paint is not acceptable.

In the JMJ interview with Tom Bowlus he states it’s a hot output pickup as well. I can’t find the link currently...
